INTR 1020 Final Reflection Prompts

1. You began this course by exploring your future career and creating a Weebly page that
described the qualifications and skills necessary to be successful in that career. In 3-5,
well written sentences tell us what career you chose and why you want to follow this
path. What is your motivation? If your choice no longer attracts you, what alternative
are you considering and why do you think this is a better match?

Though out the course, I have been telling people that I plan on going to Medical School and
being an Emergency room doctor. People overall seemed surprised and I have gotten some other
interesting suggestions. One of these suggestions is that I should go into the military and be a
medic. My mom swears up and down that I should change my major and be a lawyer. The
suggestions were helpful because they made me realize why I wanted to be an ER doctor. They
have made me more confident in my decision.

2. In the second week you brought a set of notes to class and reviewed them with a
partner. Afterwards you revised them to make them more useful for learning. In 3-5,
well written sentences describe what changes you made to your notes and explain why
you found this helpful.

I realized that I need to be more organized with my notes. I also found that I need to take my
time writing them because my handwriting can be hard to read if I rush. I also learned, via the
group discussion afterward, that organization is one of the keys to successful note taking.

3. In week 3 you came up with a degree plan. In 3-5, well written sentences describe what
you hope to achieve at UCBA and what plan to do after UCBA.

I hope to obtain my associates through UC Clermont and a bachelors through UC Main. But I
have realized through this course (and others I am currently taking) that I want more than a
degree, I want a better understanding of science. I am planning on doing research as soon as I
don’t have to wear a mask everywhere I go. I also want to do internships at a hospital because I
read that this makes students more prepared for the medical career by making them more
comfortable with pacients. And I am going (hopefully) into the medical career.

4. In the fourth week you started doing research on your chemical substance. In 3-5, well
written sentences describe your compound and what you found out about it.

Fentanyl is a schedule II drug. It is used only if no other pain treatment has worked. It cannot
be obtained unless directly prescribed by a doctor. It is highly addictive as it is made in a lab
from opioids and is considered an opioid itself.

5. In week 5, using Bloom’s Taxonomy levels as a guide, you wrote questions about the
chapter you had read in the Poisoner’s Handbook. Share with us your two best
questions and in 3-5, well written sentences say why you picked them.
“Synthesis: Propose a better way to safely handle Radium than the technique used by the
factory workers.” And “Evaluate: Support or refute the statement- The deaths caused by radium
could have been prevented with the knowledge known by scientists and the factory workers.”

I like the Evaluate one better because it was fun to write. It also makes me feel clever
when I ask someone to [asks in a deep and intense voice] “Support or refute the statement”. Plus,
the first few types of questions are so easy to write. The hard ones to write (the last few) are the
most fun.

5. In week 6 you did an assessment of an exam and reviewed how you had prepared for it.
In 3-5, well written sentences describe three study strategies you used that worked well
and tell us why they worked well, or describe three study strategies that you are going
to try for the next exam and tell us why you think they might help you prepare.

After I took the exam I wrote about, I realized that with it being an online class I could use
the whole internet to study. Before I was using only what the instructors gave me. So apparently,
there’s a lot of people who know about general biology and general chemistry. They have helped
a lot.

6. Threaded through the whole course has been the Poisoner’s Handbook. In 3-5, well
written sentences tell us what you enjoyed most about your chapter. What made the
case particularly interesting?

I did chapter eight and it talked about Marie Curie and Radon.
I read a book called Scythe and in the book characters would take the name of a respected
scientist from our century. One of the main characters was Curie. I found it interesting reading
about what the actual Curie did.
I also found it interesting that it was a She. The time period was not to kind to women
(though it did give credit to her and her husband). I wonder how much was her and how much
was him.

7. Another piece of the course was creating an e-portfolio (Weebly) that allowed you to
build a professional online image as a UCBA student. In 3-5 well written sentences tell
us what pages you found particularly useful and why.

I liked the research page. It was easy to lay out everything I had to say about the chemical on
that page. I also liked the colander/scheduling page because the requirement of having to put
pictures helped me organize myself visually.

9. And finally, in 5-8 well written sentences tell us what things you really enjoyed in the
course and why. What things should we definitely keep in for next semester?

I liked the breakout rooms. They made it easy to talk to a small group about something and
then jump back and ask a question. I think you guys communicated very well during this course
(which is saying something because of how college has been). I also think you have adapted very
well to an online format. I can see that this is not how the class is usually ran and I appreciate the
work you have done to make it flow smoothly.

Personally, I didn’t like the study resources page. I go to Clermont and didn’t know if I should
look for Clermont’s or do Blue Ash’s. I also don’t think it was a great use of time.
