Biography

William Harvey

- He was an English physician, embryologist, and


physiologist.

- William was born in the town of Folkestone,

England, April 1st, 1578

-was he first to correctly describe the properties


of blood as it is distributed throughout the body
through the pumping of the heart,

- He began his basic studies at the Grammar School


in Canterbury at the age of ten.

- In fifteen hundred and ninety, he began his higher studies in Cambridge, where he
managed to finish his medical degree.

-He traveled to Italy to study at the medical school of Padua, considered one of the
best in Europe.

-In Padua he met Professor Fabrizio, who further encouraged him to develop the
field of embryology and physiology.

- Upon returning to his country of origin, he obtained the necessary documentation


to practice the medical profession in one thousand six hundred and four he entered
the Royal College of London.

- Years later, love knocks on his door, upon meeting the beautiful and intelligent
daughter of King James I's personal physician, Elizabeth Browne,
- This union not only brought him happiness but many benefits in his medical life,

- He entered the St. Bartholomew Hospital as a resident, where he was able to carry
out all the research that he had in mind from his university stage.

- Later, William Harvey served as a professor of anatomy and surgery, causing


astonishment and admiration among his pupils.

- He April 17, 1618 , Harvey gave his first and famous address on the circulation of
the blood.

- In 1642, William Harvey moved to the United Kingdom to become a professor at


Merton College.

- blood circulation was the first adjusted explanation of an organic process and the
starting point toward experimental physiology.

-In his old age he was appointed president of the College of Physicians, but William
did not accept the position due to his poor health. Harvey died at the age of eighty
in Roehampton, London on June 3, 1657
