A REAL GOOD SMILE
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

 William John Francis Naughton or Bill Naughton is an Iris born British Playwright
and author.
 Naughton became a prolific writer of plays, Novels, short stories and children’s book.
 His preferred subject matter was working class society, which is reflected in much of
his literature.

THEMATIC EXPLORATION & CHARACTERIZATION OF THE TEXT:

 This story tells us about 14-year-old boy called Billy, and his attempt to get a job in a
locomotive shed.

 This story tells us about non-verbal communication skills required at the time of
getting a job and also at the workplace.

 It is found that most of the communication takes place through non-verbal

communication.

 The story also underlines the importance and role of smile in human life.

 This story is about 14-year-old boy Billy in those days it was school leaving age and
to find job.

 Billy was in trouble because he couldn’t find job and out of work.

 He thought that everybody was talking about him behind his back, he was ashamed to
show his face in the street.

 Billy thought that it was not his fault but fault of his father and mother, because they
thought that their Billy should get special job otherwise there were hundred of job
Billy could get.

 Billy could get job of piercer in spinning mill but his parents excepted that he should
become apprentice in the locomotive shed.
 Billy would start job as dirt wiper, in few years’ greaser, and after a long time he
would become oiler and greaser and then promoted as foot plate of an engine, fireman
of an engine and become engine driver at the age fifty.

 There was need of influence to get a job in loco shed to Billy therefore he was in
disgrace.

 Alf-Agar next door neighbour, he was common plate layer, he knew oiler and greaser
called Tom Petty, who knew Mr. Bidwell, who was boss of loco shed, but Mr.
Bidwell was like a headmaster, not sort of man you could easily approach.

 Alf Agar came one day and told that one Friday evening arrangement is made about
Billy’s job for loco shed.

 But Alf told that Mr. Bidwell is against of any kind of influence, instead the person
should go ask himself for the job before Mr. Bidwell.

 Billy said ‘But how do I ask? I said. ‘Come here and I will show you’, said Alf.
Parents were watching and Alf was explaining He told Mr. Bidwell don’t bear sight
that a boy with his hands in pocket.

 But Billy is habitual to walk his hand in pocket he tried to took it out but it remains
and father spotted it to Billy.

 On the other hand, Mr. Bidwell like to see a lad with his shoulders well back, said
Alf.

 Alf, pushed back Billy’s shoulders until his backbone seemed to be splitting, Billy
straightened up and tried to bring his chin in and stick his chest out.

 Alf, further told that Mr. Bidwell doesn’t allow mumbling or meemawin, such as,

Anything like that drives him mad, you have got to speak up in a loud, clear voice. I
have come for job, sir! As though you meant it.

One more thing he want. A real good smile, said Alf.

 But in the evening Alf Agar went out Billy’s house and inform Billy that Mr.
Bidwell wants Billy to start at the locomotive shed from tomorrow morning when
Billy heard that he could not believe but Alf Agar told him that Mr. Bidwell like the
way Billy spoke to him and he felt that Billy was an honest lad and he really admired
his honesty.

Thus Billy got the job not by the help of the influence of any person but by the help of his
honesty more than that as one proverbs suggest
“ The Eye are windows to the soul” and “ The face is the index of the mind .”

Mr. Bidwell shows honesty in the eyes of Billy and innocence in his behavior because Billy
did not pretend and therefore where ever you go “Be yourself”. Billy never spoke about the
honesty that he had yet just by the expression of the spark that Billy had in his eyes was
recognized by Mr. Bidwell.

My Opinion :
This story use simple present tense, it make me easy to catch the mean. In other
hand, the story is very simple and short. The story use some characters to support main
character. By the way, i can get some moral value, such as :
I love this story because the story teach us how to be a honest people. Become a
honest person is more important than everything else like Mr Bidwell said in the story. We
should act like who we are and forget about want to be somebody else to make someone like
us. It is the worst! If someone love us because who we are, it mean they love all of us.
In other hand, we should respect to older person. When we talk to older person we
should respect and be humble. It is because we have different social context when we talk to
person in our age.
