1. RS485 Fibre Transceiver Requirements

1.1. The fibre transceiver shall provide two independent data channels operating as either
multi-mode or single-mode devices (depending on the model).

1.2. Each channel will be capable of transparently supporting data speeds of 1MB/S on a
single fibre.

1.3. Each data channel will be capable of handling 2-wire half-duplex RS485 data as per the
TIA/EIA standards.

1.4. The multi-mode fibre transceiver shall be capable of supporting distances up to 4km
between fibre transceivers.

1.5. The single-mode fibre transceiver shall be capable of supporting distances up to 40km
between fibre transceivers.

1.6. Up to 60 devices per RS485 channel shall be supported.

1.7. The fibre transceiver shall support the following network topologies:

1.7.1. point-to-point,

1.7.2. multi-drop,

1.7.3. redundant self-healing ring topology.

1.8. The fibre transceiver will provide indication of port faults and network damage which
shall support the following:

1.8.1. LED indication at the unit,

1.8.2. relay output at the unit,

1.8.3. configurable to indicate either local or global (all transceivers) faults.

1.9. LED indicators on the fibre transceiver shall indicate the following:

1.9.1. data activity,

1.9.2. synchronisation status,

1.9.3. fault status,

1.9.4. fault location.

1.10. Each channel shall support individually selectable RS485 biasing via a dip-switch.

1.11. The operating temperature for the fibre transceiver will be -40 oC to +75oC.

1.12. The fibre transceiver shall have reverse polarity protection.
