Lab 3: DC Machine

Preliminary:

1. Given the no-load test results of a DC shunt motor:

Speed: 3000rpm
Applied voltage: 300V
Field current: 0.25A

a. Calculate the motor constant Km, where Km = Kφ.


b. If the applied voltage is unchanged, the field current is adjusted to (1). 0.125A
(half of the previous field current (0.25A) and (2). 0.5A (double of the previous
field current (0.25A), calculate motor speed of each case. Assumed that magnetic
flux (φ) is proportional to field current.

2. For a shunt DC generator, define the concept of critical field resistance. Explain why
the shunt field resistance of the generator must be smaller than the critical field
resistance.
