Unit: Forces
Aim of the Unit:

To introduce the concept of forces and to explore push and pull forces.

To investigate push and pull forces at work in the playground.

To explore the force of friction.

To explore the force of buoyancy.

Australian Curriculum

ACSSUO33 – A push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape.

ACSHE034 – Science involves observing, asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects
and events.

ACSHE035 – People use science in their daily lives, including when caring for their environment and
living things.

ACSIS037 – Pose and respond to questions, and make predictions about familiar objects events.

ACSIS038 – Participate in guided investigations to explore and answer questions.

ACSIS040 – Use a range of methods to sort information including drawings and provided tables and
through discussion with predictions.

ACSIS041 – Compare observations with those of others.

ACSIS039 – Use informal measurements to collect and record observations, using digital
technologies as appropriate
Unit Outline

Lesson Learning Intention Curriculum

1 – Introduction to Forces / To understand what forces are ACSSU033
Push and Pull and recognise that there are
different types of forces
2 – Forces in Play Understand that forces are ACSSU033, ACSIS037,
needed when we play. Identify ACSIS038, ACSIS040, ACSIS041,
what forces are being used ACSIS042
3 – The Force of Friction Understand how the force of ACSSU033, ACSIS037,
friction works and how it is ACSIS038, ACSIS041, ACSIS042
different depending on the
surface and the weight of the
object.
4 – Whatever Floats your Boat Understand “Buoyant Force” ACSSU033, ACSIS037,
and how different object float ACSIS038, ACSIS041, ACSIS042
when placed in water.
5 – Gravity To understand what gravity is ACSSUO33, ACSIS037,
and how objects have their ACSIS038, ACSIS042
own gravitational pull
depending on their mass
6 – Gravity Investigation Part To understand how air ACSSU033, ACSIS037,
One resistance works ACSIS038
7 – Gravity Investigation Part To use knowledge of air ACSSU033, ACSIS037,
Two resistance to design a ACSIS038
parachute
8 - Assessment To assess their knowledge of ACSSU033, ACSIS037,
forces, the different types and ACSIS038, ACSIS040, ACSIS041,
they way they work, affecting ACSIS042
the way things move.
