DISSECTING PIG AND CHICKEN’S HEART

I. INTRODUCTION

Plant and animal cells are both eukaryotic cells, so they have several features in
common, such as the presence of a cell membrane, and cell organelles, like the nucleus,
mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, lysosomes, and golgi apparatus.
The similarities between the two have maintained themselves throughout history and
the process of evolution because the circumstances each cell type faced was similar and
needed similar tools. However, plant cells are generally larger than animal cells as
animal cells can be around 10-30 micrometers while plant cells can range from 10-100
micrometers (Shiwnarain, 2017). Nevertheless, these particular information aren’t the
only basis in differentiating plant’s cells from animal’s cells. This activity aims to
determine the major differences in plant and animal cells and its similarities together
with its functions.

II. METHODOLOGY

The researchers conducted this activity first, with a thin piece of onion epidermis
that was stripped and placed on a glass slide. Next, prepared a wet mount by staining
the specimen with iodine solution, covered with a cover slip, and mounted on the
microscope. The specimen was examined under a low power objective. Then, a few
epidermal hairs of squash root was scraped and spread on a glass slide, then a cover slip
was put and was examined under a low power objective. After that, the inner lining of
human cheek was gently scraped with a broad toothpick, and smeared on a glass slide.
A methylene blue was added to the scraped sample and a cover slip was put on top, then
it was observed under low power objective.

IV. DISCUSSION

The researchers observed the distinctions of the Plant cell and Animal cell. Despite
the fact that a few similitudes have been observed, significant contrasts were seen
throughout the activity. Each of the cells has particular qualities and vary broadly in
terms of the cell’s shape, size, and functions. Both plant and animal cell consists of
nucleus, mitochondria, golgi apparatus, and endoplasmic reticulum. The plant cell
clearly consist of cell wall, plastids such as chloroplast, vacuole, plasmodesmata, its
energy storage as starch, size with 10 up to 100 micrometers and are typically
rectangular or cube shaped. On the other hand, the animal cell consists of centrosome,
cilia, flagella, lysosome, its energy storage is in the form of complex carbohydrate
glycogen, size with 10 up to 30 micrometers and tend to have round or irregular shapes.

V. CONCLUSION

Given the fact that both are eukaryotic in structure, significant contrast were
observed. From what the researchers observed about all through the activity, plant and
animal cells indeed have complex structures and particular qualities which make them
interesting in their own specific way. In addition, despite the fact that it had shown
some similarities, variations of its cell’s size, shape, and functions were clearly
distinguished.
