Let’s Review
Below are the different illustrations of functions. Read and analyze the
difference between a one-to-one function and a many-to-one function.

1 A Luffy Robin

2 B Sanji Nami

3 C Zoro Hancock

In the illustration above, 1 is In the illustration, Luffy is

being related to A, 2 also with A, paired with Hancock, Sanji is
and 3 also with A. Since many paired with Nami, and Zoro is
values on the left side relates to paired with Robin. This relation
a single value on the right side, shows a one-to-one
then the function is many-to- correspondence. This function
one. This function can be also can be also illustrated like the
illustrated like the following: following:

f(x) = (1,A),(2,A),(3,A) or as f(x) = (Luffy, Hancock)),(Sanji,

ordered pairs; Nami),(Zoro, Robin) or as
ordered pairs;
Domain Range
1 A Domain Range
2 A Luffy Hancock
3 A Sanji Nami
or as a table and; as a graph. Zoro Robin
or as a table and; as a graph.

For this lesson, you also need to have the knowledge of manipulating linear
and quadratic equations including all the properties of equality. The properties of
equality include, Addition Property of Equality (APE), Multiplication Property of
Equality(MPE), Reflexive Property of Equality, Symmetric Property of Equality,
Substitution Property of Equality, and Transitive Property of Equality.

Let’s Study
KEY CONCEPTS
 The function is one-to-one if for any x1, x2 in the domain of f, then f(x1) ≠ f(x2).
It means that the equivalent y -value is not paired with two different x-values.
 To find the inverse of a function, all you have to do is to invert the domain and
range that is exchanging x values to y values and y values to x values. The
inverse of a function is denoted by 𝑓 −1 (𝑥). Also remember that 𝑓(𝑓 −1 (𝑥)) =
𝑓 −1 (𝑓(𝑥)) = 𝑥.

3
Take into consideration the following examples of one-to-one functions:
1. A member of PAG-IBIG can only have one account number. This also
suggests that each member has a unique account number.
2. A country has only one capital city assigned like Philippines is to
Manila and China is to Beijing, and so on.

To get the inverse of a one-to-one function, study the following examples:

 f(x) = {(1,A),(2,A),(3,A)} has an inverse of 𝑓 −1 (𝑥)= {(A,1),(A,2),(A,3)}
 f(x) = {(Luffy, Hancock)),(Sanji, Nami),(Zoro, Robin)} has an inverse of
𝑓 −1 (𝑥) =(Hancock, Luffy),(Nami,Sanji),(Robin,Zoro)
 f(x) = x+5 has an inverse of 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) = 𝑥 − 5, this is because, we have to
change f(x) to x and vice versa and solve for f(x) afterwards.
f(x) = x+5
x = f(x) + 5
x-5 = f(x) +5-5
𝒇−𝟏 (𝒙) = x-5
 Doing the same process, the inverse of f(x) = √𝑥 + 7 is
f(x) = √𝑥 + 7
x = √𝑓(𝑥) + 7
𝑥 2 = 𝑓(𝑥) + 7
𝒇−𝟏 (𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 -7

Let’s Practice
Below are different representations of functions. Determine their inverses.
1. f(x) = {(1,2),(3,4),(5,6)}

2. g(x) = Domain Range

A 1
B 1
C 1

3. h(x) = x-8
4. a(x) = 5x
5. b(x) =√𝑥 + 10

Let’s Connect
Hinata Shouyo is planning to conduct a community outreach program where he
intends to raise funds for buying books for street children. He wants to give
online service by solving math problems and his per hour commission will be
accumulated for the project. He stumbled into a problem asking for the inverse
of 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 11 . Help Hinata figure out the right answer.
