I. Objective
A. Content Standard
The learner demonstrates understanding of antiderivative and Reiman
integral.
B. Performance Standard
The learner is able to formulate and solve accurately real-life problems
involving areas of plane regions
C. Learning Competency
The learner compute the area of plane region using the definite integral.
D. Objective
At the end of the lesson, the class are expected to use definite integral to
find the area of a region bounded by the two curves.

a. Activity Class I want you to find a partner, you can


(By pair activity) choose your seatmate. You will find the
area of the following shape with
dimensions together with your partner.
Write your answers on your notebook or
any sheets of paper. Then later on, I will
call someone to show their solutions on
the board and explain their answer to the
class. Is the instruction clear class? Any
clarification? If none, find a partner. Does
everyone has a partner already? If so,

b. Analysis One of the application of definite integral


is finding the area of a region between two
curves. But how?
Case 1. Upper Function minus Lower
Function

Let f(x) and g(x) be continuous functions


over an interval [a,b] such that f(x)≥g(x) on
[a,b] . We want to find the area between
the graphs of the functions, as shown in
figure below.

Note: this formula considers that an upper
function is 𝑓(𝑥) while the lower function is
𝑔(𝑥).

Case 2: Right-most Curve minus Left-


most Curve
Let f(y) and g(y) be continuous curves
over an interval [c,d] such that f(y)≥g(y) on
[c,d] . We want to find the area between
the graphs of the functions, as shown in
figure below.

Note: this formula considers a right-most


curve 𝑓(𝑦) and a left-most curve is 𝑔(𝑦).
Also the term “curve” was used here in
case 2 instead of a “function” considering
the formal definition of a function.

Let’s have an example


Determine the area below 𝑓(𝑥) = 3 +
2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 and above the x-axis.

Upper function: 𝑓(𝑥) = 3 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2


Lower function: x-axis or y=0

Since we weren’t given any limits on x in


the problem statement, we’ll need to get
those. We can just equate the two
functions then solve for x.
3 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 = 0
−(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 3) = 0

𝑥 = −1, 𝑥 = 3
The area is,

Determine the area to the left of 𝑔(𝑦) =


3 − 𝑦 2 and to the right of 𝑥 = −1.

Right function: 𝑔(𝑦) = 3 − 𝑦 2


Left function: 𝑥 = −1.

Since we weren’t given any limits on y in


the problem statement we’ll need to get
those.
3 − 𝑦 2 = −1
−𝑦 2 = −4
𝑦2 = 4

𝑦 = 2, 𝑦 = −2

y=8x, y=2x and x=4 is approximately 6.45
sq. units.

another one for the explaination of the
