“DISTANCE FORMULA”

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
A. Derive the distance formula.
B. Demonstrate the use of distance formula using ordered pairs.
C. Apply the distance formula in solving real-life problems.

D. Discussion

Activity 1. The students asked to perform the following task using a software application.
( https://www.geogebra.org/m/JMMKv7cx )
 Plot the points A(2,1) and B(6,7) on the cartesian coordinate plane.
 Draw a horizontal line passing through A
 Draw a vertical line containing B.
 Mark and label the point of intersection of the two lines as C.
 Connect A and B a line segment.
 Replace the coordinates of A by (X1, Y1) and B by (X2, Y2).
Activity 2. The students are now group into 3 and answer the following questions assigned to their
group for them to discuss. After 5 minutes the group presenter will present to the class the answer of their respective
group.

Group 1.

 What are the coordinates of C? Explain how you obtained your answer.
 What is the distance between A and C?
 How about the distance between B and C?

Group 2.

 What kind of triangle is formed by A, B and C? Explain your answer.

 How will you find the distance between A and B?
 What is the measure of line AB equal to?

Group 3.

 What would be the resulting coordinates of C?

 What expression represents the distance between A and C? how about between B and
C?
 What equation will you use to find the distance between A and B? Explain your answer.

Ask students the following questions:

 How did you find the activity?

 Did you have any difficulty while performing the activity? If yes, why?

Presents a video presentation of the “Distance Formula” on screen.

 As what you have seen on the screen, distance formula is an equation that can be used to find the
distance between any pair of points on the coordinate plane.

 The standard form of the distance formula is d= ( x 2−x 1)2 ( y 2− y 1 )
2

Where (X1,Y1) and (X2,Y2) are points on the cartesian coordinate plane.

Using the Distance Formula, find the distance between two points.

Example 1: Find the distance between A(1,0) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 B(7,8).

Solution: To find the distance between A and B, the following procedures can be followed.
1. 𝐿𝑒𝑡 (𝑥1,𝑦1)=(1,3) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (𝑥2,𝑦2)=(7,11)
2. Substitute the corresponding values of 𝑥1,𝑦1,𝑥2,𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦2 in the distance formula
AB=√(7−1) + ( 8−0 )
2 2

3. Solve the resulting equation.

AB=√ (6) + ( 8 )
2 2

AB=√ 36+64
AB=√ 100
AB=10
Therefore, the distance between A and B is 10 units.

Example 2: Find the distance between P(2,2) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 Q(6,5).

Solution:
PQ=√ (6−2) + ( 5−2 )
2 2

PQ=√ (4) + ( 3 )
2 2

PQ=√ 16+9
PQ=√ 25

PQ=5

Therefore, the distance between P and Q is 5 units.
