FUNCTION and their functions

Everything in this world has their own functions. Everything in this world has its own
and unique functions. Non-living things such as stones, buildings, computers and
living things such as humans and animals has also their own functions. With that, we
can say that nothing in this world is useless.

This module is all about how Function in Mathematics do its functions. In this
module, you will learn how to appreciate the different use of Function in daily lives
and how it is relevant to you as a student and as a human being. This is very
important for you as student to be able to navigate life easily using Mathematics.

At the end of the module, you will be able to:

a. Evaluate a function;
b. Solve problems involving functions; and
c. Appreciate the usefulness of functions in real-life situations.

What is Function?

A function relates to an input and an output.

It is like a machine that has an input, and
an output is somehow related to the input.

FUNCTION – is a relation in which each element of the input is associated with
exactly one element of the output.

Example

“f(x)= …” is the classic way of writing a function.

f(x) = x2 output or
input or range
function name
domain

(We say it as “f of x equals x squared”)

The best way to evaluate a FUNCTION is to PLUG IT IN! What goes into the
function will be put inside the parenthesis () after the name of the function
Example:
f(x) = x2

and with an input of 4 or x=4

f(4) = 42

f(4) = 16

Example

RANGE – is the set of values that a function can take on.

DOMAIN – is the set of element to which a mathematical variable is limited. It is

the set on which the function is defined.

Example

INPUT – is the element in any
value that is plugged in the
equation to produce an output.

OUTPUT – the output is the result or answer from a question or in math equation.

RELATION – is the connection between numbers in one set and numbers in the
other set.

ALGEBRA OF FUNCTIONS
If two functions have a common domain like “x”, then arithmetic can be
performed with them using the 4 basic Mathematical operations, the addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division.

(f+g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

(f-g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)
(f▪g)(x) = f(x) ▪ g(x)
(f/g)(x) = f(x) / g(x)

For Example:
f(x) = 5x + 1
g(x) = 3x – 3
Where; x = 2

1. Addition of Function
(f+g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

(f+g)(2) = 5(2) + 1 + 3(2) - 3

= (10 + 1) + (6 – 3)
= 17 – 3
= 14

2. Subtraction of Function
(f-g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)

(f-g)(2) = 5(2) + 1 - 3(2) - 3

= (10 + 1) – (6 – 3)
= 11 – 3
=8

3. Multiplication of Function
(f▪g)(x) = f(x) ▪ g(x)

(f ▪ g)(2) = 5(2) + 1 ▪ 3(2) - 3

= (10 + 1) ▪ (6 – 3)
= 11 ▪ 3
= 33

4. Multiplication of Function
(f/g)(x) = f(x) / g(x)

(f ▪ g)(2) = 5(2) + 1 ÷ 3(2) - 3

= (10 + 1) / (6 – 3)
= 11 / 33

We can use function as we solve problems involving Physics.

For example;
A man can run 120m from point A to point B for only 30 seconds. His total
speed is equal to 4m/s. What will happen to his speed if,
a. the distance is doubled
b. the time is doubled
c. and both the distance and time is doubled

Solutions:
NOTE that Speed = distance over time or S = d/t.
“x” stands for the number of time the distance is multiplied. So if we transform this
equation into a function,

S(x) = xd / t
S(x) = the name of the function or the SPEED
x = the input
xd/t = the output

A. the distance is doubled

x = 2 because of the word doubled
S(x) = xd/t
S(2) = 2(120m) / 30s
= 240m / 30s

= 8 m/s
Therefore, if we double the distance the speed will also be doubled.

B. the time is doubled

x = 2 because of the word doubled
S(x) = d/xt
S (2) = 120m / (2)30s
= 120m / 60s

= 2 m/s
Therefore, if we double the time the original speed will be divided into two.
C. and both the distance and time is doubled
x = 2 because of the word doubled
S(x) = xd/xt
S(2) = (2)120m / (2)30s
=240 / 60s

= 4 m/s
Therefore, if we double the distance and time, the speed will be the same with the
original speed.

Task 4: WHAT IS YOUR FUTURE HEIGHT?

DIRECTION: Look for anyone aged 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 and identify their
height. Try your visions identifying their height after specific years using
functions.

The normal increased height of a person is 6.35 cm. Use the formula H(x) = present
height of the person (in centimeters) + normal height increase times number of
years.
Height after Height after Height after Height after Height
NAME 2 yrs. 4 years 6 years 10 years after 15
years

Let H(x) = the future height

ph = present height
n = normal height increased (constant)
x = number of years in the future

Therefore, H(x) = ph + nx
For example:
ph = 167cm ph = 167cm
n = 6.35cm n = 6.35cm
x = 2 years after x = 4 years after

H(x) = ph + nx H(x) = ph +nx

= 167cm + 6.35cm (2) = 167cm + 6.35cm (4)

= 167cm + 12.7 = 67cm + 25.4

H(x) = 179.7cm H(x) = 192.4cm

Task 5: DESCRIBE ME!

Based on the activity that you have performed, answer the following questions.
(Minimum of three sentences)
1. What is the relationship between the numbers of years in the future to the normal

height increase?

2. How do the input affect the future height given at the table?
