STRENGTHENING IN

Okra, which is also called lady’s finger is a warm

season tropical vegetable that is also grown for ornamental
purposes. Its delicate foliage and showy blooms that look like
hibiscus (don’t forget okra belongs to the same hibiscus
family). Its scientific name is Abelmoschus esculentus. Okra
is a vegetable rich in vitamins A, B, C, calcium, potassium and
many minerals. It is low in calories and has a dietary fiber
content.

Okra has been suggested to help manage blood sugar in

cases of Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. Popular
forms of okra for medicinal purposes include okra water, okra
peels and powdered seeds.

STRENGHTENING IT
Growing okra in pots doesn’t require a lot of space and it is easy too if you complete all of the planting
requirements. Okra is easy to grow but the seeds have a hard coat that can slow germination. To speed up the
process, soak the seeds overnight in warm water before planting. Wrapping the seeds in moist paper towels also
works well.
Activity 4. How To Grow Okra Plant
Seeds are given to you. Following the procedure below, grow your own okra plant.

1. Purchase the seeds and soak.

 The first step for growing okra is to get the seeds. Ask for the
dwarf okra variety that will not grow above 5 feet tall. However,
you can grow any okra variety in a pot, but it is best if you
choose the dwarf one. If you live in a climate with short
summers, search for varieties that mature fast.
2. Prepare the site.
 Okras require full sun (at least 8 hours a day) and prefer soil that is
loose, fertile and slightly alkaline. If the soil is more acidic, work
some lime into the bed a few months before planting. Enrich the soil
with compost, turning it into the bed with a rake. Finally, add a half
cup of slow-release 5-10-10 fertilizer for every 20 square feet of
garden space.

3. Plant the seeds.

 It is best to plant okra after daytime temps hit 85 degrees and
nighttime temps reach the low 60s. Use a garden hoe to make 1"-
deep furrows in the garden bed. Space the furrows 24" apart.
Place the presoaked seeds into the furrows, spacing them 6"
apart. Gently rake the soil over the seeds to cover them. After
lightly firming the soil, water the seeds well. Place a garden
marker to indicate the crops.

4. Cultivate the plants.

 The cultivation of okra plant is extremely easy but requires a lot
of heat. The plant can grow above 50 F (10 C), but to flower and
to bear fruit abundantly the temperature must be around 75 to 95
F (23-35 C) ideally. The plant can tolerate higher temperatures
well but fails to grow when the temperature starts to touch lower
levels.

5. Harvest the Okra.

 Okra plants will produce large flowers about 2 months after
planting. The okra pods will be ready to pick 3 to 4 days later.
Harvest the pods when they are 3 to 4 inches long. If the okra
gets too large, it will be tough and stringy. Pick the okra every 1
to 2 days or yields will decrease.

Reminder: “For those who do not have enough space, you may use the mechanism of urban gardening.”

CHALLENGE YOUR MIND

Testing seeds avoid wasting good seeds. There is no need of replanting; therefore, allowing
uniform germination and maturity of the crop. In other words, germination tests will save you time, energy,
money and planting space.

Formula in the Computation of the Percentage of Germination

no. of seeds germinated x 100

Percentage (%) of Germination =
no. of seeds sown
Example: After inspecting the seed box, you find that only 85 seeds germinated out of 100 seeds that you have
sown. The percentage of germination will be

no. of seeds germinated x 100

Percentage (%) of Germination =
no. of seeds sown

85 x 100
=
100

8500
=
100

= 85%

Activity 5. Calculating Percentage of Germination

Visit your okra plant site, using the given formula, determine how many of the seed sown are
germinated. Write your computation on the table below.

LINKING IT

LIVING IT
