II. NARRATIVE REPORT

The traditional concept of Brigada Eskwela, which involves physical cleaning, painting,
repainting, and doing minor repairs as stipulated in DM No. 032 series 2020 will no longer
happen as amended in DM No. 053 series 2020. However, it may be done two weeks before the
opening of classes in public schools on August 24, 2020, depending on the prevailing local risk
classification in community quarantine guidelines.

In connection to this, the Macatbong Elementary School tried its best to follow such
guidelines and still participate in the Brigada Eskwela 2020. The new concept of Brigada
Eskwela focused on preparations and strengthening partnership engagement to ensure that
learning continues even in the time of COVID-19.

Classrooms were cleaned inside and outside, disinfected and see to it that it was virus
free. The bulletin boards were updated as well as the learning materials necessary for instruction.
The gardens were also cultivated

2. Even during the pandemic of COVID-19, each of the fifteen (15) classes of Macatbong
Elementary School participated and were assigned to different areas within the school vicinity to
establish their Gulayan sa Paaralan Project. Areas in front and or at the back of the classrooms
were usually used as the area for the project. This is for the purpose of beautification and
maintains cleanliness in the school surroundings.

3. Although the school adopts the Modular-Distance Learning as the learning management
system, the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project still promotes hands-on learning on crop production.
Pupils were encouraged to plant vegetables and flowering plants on their houses and bring one of
their plants in the school.
Pupils were taught about the importance of cultivating soils and preparing them for
planting season. They were also taught about proper direct planting, transplanting, watering, and
weeding practices. Pupils were able to gain knowledge and hands-on experiences on proper
vegetable production. All of these were done on their own homes.

4. The harvested products were used as a source of fresh vegetables during the school feeding
program. Instead of buying vegetables outside the school premises for school feeding programs,
the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project serves as a source of fresh and organic vegetables for pupils.
Aside from that, stakeholders such as the community also benefited from the produce of Gulayan
sa Paaralan. The community also bought vegetables in the school during harvest season.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

1. Participated in the planning of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project.

Part of the School Based Management practices is the conduct of yearly planning activity
of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project. The teachers and staff decide what activities are they going
to undertake to implement the project. Considerations were taken into account during the
planning such as budgeting, time frame, and manpower constraints.

2. Participated in the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project School monitoring and evaluation.

To assess the outputs of the project, school monitoring and evaluation was conducted.
Each class advisers were given awards and recognitions for their valuable effort in promoting the
project.

1. Incorporated Gulayan sa Paaralan Project in the lessons and discussions of teachers.

Teachers were able to localized and contextualized their lessons by incorporating
Gulayan sa Paaralan Project.

2. Used the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project as a venue for hands-on training in crop production.
To enhance the skills and knowledge of pupils about crop production and agriculture, the
teachers of EPP/TLE used the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project as a hands-on training ground.
Teachers encouraged pupils to have their own gulayan in their homes.

3. Promoted the use of new technologies in vegetable production through the use of plastic
mulch, green houses, bio-intensive gardening and the like.
Teachers were able to showcase new technologies in vegetable and crop production by
using innovative methods such as the use of plastic mulch instead of regular weeding, bio-
intensive gardening instead of the use commercial fertilizers, and the use of greenhouse instead
of the use of direct sunlight.

4. Promoted the use of high yielding varieties (HYV’s) in crop production through the use of
high quality seeds.

PHYSICAL FACILITIES

1. Intensified the “GULAYAN SA PAARALAN PROJECT” to support the feeding program of

the school

2. Putting up greenhouse and use of plastic mulches to promote and introduce new technologies
in crop production.

II. BEST PRACTICES

1. Produced and used concoctions (such as FPJ, FFJ, IMO, and LABS) in the Gulayan sa
Paaralan Project.

2. Promoted the use of High Yielding Varieties (HYV’s) through the use of high-quality
seeds. Through the use of high-quality seeds, the project was able to minimize yield
losses during harvest.

3. Reduced the labor requirement for weeding through the use of plastic mulch. The plastic
mulches prevent the growth of weeds between the plants.

4. Improved seedling production through the use of a greenhouse. Vegetables produced

inside the greenhouse especially the leafy vegetables have superior quality and
characteristics as compared to those vegetables produced in natural climatic conditions.

5. Promoted Bio-Intensive Gardening through the use of compost pits. The school were able
to follow the bio-intensive gardening techniques wherein they were able to use animal
manure, dried leaves and other biodegradable materials as a source of organic fertilizer.

6. Promoted and intensified organic gardening through crop rotation.

To lessen insects and pests, teachers and pupils observed crop rotation in planting
vegetables. This also minimized the use of commercial insecticides and pesticides which
is also harmful to our health.

7. Continuous planting of crops for the availability of fresh vegetables throughout the year.
The teachers and pupils continuously planted vegetables throughout the year.

III. CHALLENGES

1. Scarcity of water during dry months and dry seasons.

During dry months and seasons, the water in the locality becomes scarce and the
plants die because of drought. Water from deep wells were almost inaccessible that is
why most pupils are having a hard time watering the plants. Vegetables suffer drought
during there are no classes such as Saturday, Sunday and holidays.

2. Low participation rate among parents.

It can be noticed that only few parents are visible in participating in the said
project. Parents from the lower grades are mostly active. Parents in the intermediate have
difficult times in attending to such activities.

3. Expensive seeds and seedlings.

High quality seeds and seedlings are expensive. They command a higher price if
compared to non-certified seeds. However, teachers and pupils have no other choice but
to buy them.

IV. PLANS FOR 2021

1. Continuous Implementation of best practices, programs and project.

For the school year 2021-2022, the gulayan sa paaralan project will continue its
best practices and programs to promote the said project. The use of organic fertilizers will
be intensified and the use of insecticides and pesticides will be minimized.

2. Involvement of parents and stakeholders in conducting the project.

Teachers and staff shall organize and campaign for the active involvement of the
parents and stakeholders in the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project. Meetings will be conducted
to promote the benefits and advantages of having the said project.

3. Local Government Units and Non Government Organizations support in conducting the
project.
Teachers and staff shall seek help and support from local government units and
non-government organizations to promote the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project by giving or
donating additional garden tools and other equipments.

4. Providing additional water sources.
