How Dan Learned to Ride a Horse
One day, Lito invited his cousin, Dan, to his father’s farm in the barrio. Dan lived in the town.
“Let’s ride on my horse,” Lito said. “I don’t know how to ride a horse,” said Dan. “It’s easy! I’m going to teach
you.” Lito got his horse and rode easily on its back. “Come on! Hold my hand and place one foot on mine while
I pull you up,” he said.
At first Dan was afraid, but when he tried, he found it easy. He did not feel afraid anymore.
Together they rode far across the field. It was already dark when they reached home.
Flowers for Mother One day Pule’s mother was waiting for her children to come home from school. After a
while she heard some voices from the yard. She was glad her sons were already home.
“Mother! Mother!” called one of her sons. “Pule will be a little late. He said he has something to get for you.”
A little later Pule came. He had some flowering plants with him. “These are for you, Mother,” Pule said. I got
them for you along the way. I know you love flowers.”

DAMA DE NOCHE Most plants have bright-colored flowers.

They open during the day. There are also plants with flowers that bloom at night. Their flowers
are either white or light-colored. They smell very sweet. Some of these are the dama de
noche, sampaguita and camia. Dama de noche means “lady of the night.” Its little star-like
flowers open at night. They give out a sweey odor that can be smelled from a distance. By its
fragrance, you can tell that there is a dama de noche plant nearby. In the morning the flowers
lose their fragrance.
LET’S PLAY “EIGHT” “Eight” is a game that can be played by any number of children. The players first
draw a very big figure 8 on the ground. Then the one who is “it” stands on the line of figure 8 while all the
other children stay inside the figure. The “It” may run around the figure 8 trying to catch anybody while the
players run anywhere inside the figure in order not to be caught. Anyone who steps outside the figure, or
is caught by the It becomes the next It.
