A. DIRECTIONS: Read the sentences and identify the words with

Long vowel sounds are read with their letter names. It is


better to practice reading these words in phrases, sentences,

skill.

Read the following phrases and sentences taken from the

Up and Away

It was a stormy day. Father and Susan were playing chess.


Mother was busy cooking. Toby came. He was holding a kite.”
Father, I like to play with my kite. I like to see how it flies up and
away,” said Toby.

“No, son. That cannot be. It is a wet day. We play kites only
on windy days,” answered Father.

“But, Father it’s windy outside. The trees sway,” said Toby.

“Yes, it’s windy but it is raining. Your kite won’t fly. It will get
wet,” said Father.

Toby went back to his room sadly. He looked out the


window. On the windowpane, was a little cute bird. It was wet. Its
body was trembling. Toby fed the bird. He put it carefully in a
cage.

The next morning, Toby woke up early.

“Oh, the sun is shining and the wind is blowing,” shouted


Toby.

Susan got Toby’s kite. “Come on, Toby. Let us play with your
kite. It is not raining anymore and it is windy outside,” said Susan.

“Oh, that’s great, but wait!” shouted Toby.

Toby Ran to his room. He got the little bird.

“What will you do with the bird, Toby?” asked Susan.

“Oh, well, I will let it go. This bird wants to fly too. I want to see
how it flies away,” said Toby.

Toby and Susan called Mother and Father. They watched
the bird as it flew away. Soon the bird was gone.

“I’m proud of you, son. You are a good boy. I’m sure you
made the little bird happy,” said Father.

“Thanks, Father. May I play with my kite now? I want to see if


it can also fly up and away,” said Toby.

Let Us Remember

Long a, i, o, and u sounds are members of the long vowel


sounds. Long vowel is the term used to refer to vowel sounds
which pronunciation is the same as its letter name. You can
record your own voice while pronouncing the long vowel sounds
to know if you’re doing it right.

The vowel sounds in the English alphabet is very crucial in


learning the English language. Mastery in vowel sounds can
improve your spelling, reading, speech, and comprehension. This
makes it very essential to religiously master the vowel sounds.

Learning how to properly read and pronounce the long


vowel sounds takes dedication and constant practice. Take time
to read English reading materials everyday to attain fluency.
