Tutorial Sheet No.1

Q1. The following data are available for a Chanch Coal of the Raniganj Coal Field:

Calculate its calorific value using two empirical formulae and compare the computed values with
experimental.

Q2. 0.72 gram of a fuel containing 80% carbon, when burnt in a bomb calorimeter, increased the
temperature of water from 27.3˚C to 29.1˚C. If the calorimeter contains 250 gm of water and its
water equivalent is 150 gm, calculate the HCV of the fuel. Give your answer in kJ/kg.

Q3. Calculate the gross and net calorific value of a coal which analyses: C 74%, H 6%, N 1%, O
9%, S 0.8%, moisture 2.2% and ash 8%.
