2
II SHORT ANSWER

Write the term that best completes each statement on the dots.

21) (3)
A quantity discount is an incentive to order larger quantities, where the price per unit is decreased
when the order is sufficiently large.

22) (3)
Knoxville Industries has their supplier asked to design an improved body armor for their new apparel.

This level of supplier involvement, known as presoursing, was sure to result in a pain free season.

23) (3)
There are five basic patterns of most demand time series:

1. horizontal

2. trend

3. seasonal

4. cyclical

5. random

3
III ESSAY.

Write your answer in the space provided.

24) (4)
Explain what the bullwhip effect is and what causes it.

The bullwhip effect is the phenomenon in supply chains whereby ordering patterns
experience increasing variance as you proceed upstream in the chain.

It can be caused by external causes ((small) changes in customer demand, e.g.), and
internal causes (engineering changes, e.g.).

See the book pag. 433, 434

25)
Air France - KLM is considering air service from its hub of operations in Amsterdam to Budapest and
Dubai. Air France - KLM has one gate at the airport, which operates 12 hours per day. Each flight
requires 1 hour of gate time. Each flight to Budapest consumes 15 hours of pilot crew time and is
expected to produce a profit of € 2.500. Serving Dubai uses 10 hours of pilot crew time per flight and
will result in a profit of € 2.000 per flight. Pilot crew labor is limited to 150 hours per day. The market
for service to Budapest is limited to nine flights per day.

a. (4)
Define the full lineair programming model.

objective function = maximize Z = € 2.500x1 + € 2.000 x2,

where x1 = number of flights to Budapest

x2 = number of flights to Dubai

The constraints are

x1 + x2 ≤ 12 (gate capacity)
15 x1 + 10 x2 ≤ 150 (labor)
x1≤ 9 (market)

x1 ≥ 0 and x2 ≥ 0

4
b. (5)
Use the graphic method of lineair programming to maximise profits for Air France – KLM.
Use the graph paper supplied, and don’t forget to put your name and student number on it!

c. (5)
Use the algebraic method for solving this lineair programming problem.

15 x1 + 10 x2 = 150 (labor)
-10x1 – 10 x2 = - 120 (gate x -10)
5x1 = 30
x1 = 6
x2 = 6

maximum profit is € 2.500 (6) + € 2.000 (6) = € 27.000
