Lesson Plan / One Step at A Time
Age group: Kindergarten through Elementary school.
Curriculum area: Music and Physical Education
Concept :Identifying form in music through physical movement and dance.
Element : Rondo form
Objective : The students will be able to perform a guided movement sequence to the song One
Step at a Time by Jordin Sparks.
Type of activity: Small and large group.
Setting: In the classroom.
Environmental aspects: I will need an open space for movement.
Materials : An instructor. The students. The song One step at a time by Jordin Sparks. A copy of
the lesson plan, including an outline of the movement sequence. A large room or space for
moving. A sound system that has an auxiliary connection. A cell phone to play the song from.
Procedures :
1. I will greet the class and explain that we have a new movement sequence.
2. I will then get the class into their preassigned groups by asking them to go grab their
name tags and sit with their group.
3. I will explain to the children that this is a “do as I do” movement sequence. I will also
teach them steps 11, 25, and 26 ahead of time. Step 26 is a “freestyle” type movement,
so I will let the student practice before we execute. I do this to monitor what the
students does, in order to determine appropriateness.
4. I will put the students into one big circle. I will stand in the center so i am visible to
everyone.
5. Once quiet, I will then show the groups the 5 simple steps to One step at a time.
6. I will show them first without music, so there is little distraction.
7. I will start by counting “1, 2, 3, go” and then go on to show the students the movement
for each theme.
8. I will then count “1, 2, 3, go” and the students will do as I do and clap the beat.
9. Next, I will have the students walk four steps in each direction of the circle, starting with
the right side and then to the left side.
10. I will count “1, 2, 3, go” an the students will execute the move.
11. Next, I will demonstrate the running an to the students and have them repeat the
movement back to me.
12. I will count “1, 2, 3, go” and execute this move with the students,
13. I will not explain the other movement sequences, as they are self explanatory.
14. I will then explain to the students that they will perform these three moves in a row.
15. The students will execute the three moves in order.
16. When the students have mastered the moves, I will then play the music. I will remind
them this is a “do as i do” dance.
17. I will begin by clapping and toe tapping from left to right for 16 counts.
18. After 16 counts, will then take four steps to the right, and repeat to the left for 25
counts.
19. After 25 counts, I will do the running man for five counts to the right, then five counts to
the left. This lasts for 30 counts.
20. After 30 counts, The students will step back four counts and clap, then step forward for
four counts and clap.34 counts,
21. After 34 counts, I will then repeat step 17 for 2 counts.
22. After that, i will repeat step 18 for 30 counts.
23. I will then repeat step 19 for 34 counts.
24. After that, i will repeat step 20 for 32 counts.
25. After 32 counts, I will wave my hands in the air over my head, while repeating the foot
work from step 17 for 40 counts.
26. After those 40 counts, I will then repeat the movement from step 20, But this is when
the students may “freestyle” and add their own moves into the sequence until the end
of the song
Assessment: I will observe the students while they participate in the movement sequence. For
every move that they have mastered, they will earn “one dollar”. This will be a paper “dollar”
that they can cash in at the classroom store. For participating and keeping focused throughout
the task, they can earn a total of $80 in classroom cash.
