Lesson 2: Exercise 2
From the excerpt of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”, determine the mood by realizing how
you feel in reading it aloud as all poems should be read.

The poem’s mood seemed gloomy to me. From the first stanza, the author
depicted that night as something cold and bleak. The person in the poem seemed to be
motivating himself to open the door, trying to be optimistic and not think about what
seems to be holding him back or making him sad.

In the second stanza, he reminisces a person. Associating that December night to

the person on his mind. He sounds mournful as he remembered her and can’t seem to
move on.

Overall, the poem took a gloomy and melancholy mood.
