 Take a clear photo of your handwritten work and send it as pdf or jpg at google classroom.
 If you do not have a printer, copy and answer the worksheet including the format.

1. Do non-crystalline materials display the phenomenon of allotropy? Why or why not? Answer in 3-
5 sentences only.
Some metals and non-metals display more than one crystal structure. This phenomenon is called
allotropy, which means that a material exhibits two or more definite forms. Non-crystalline materials do
not display this phenomenon because they don't have fixed or well-defined forms.

2. Calculate the equilibrium number of vacancies per cubic meter for copper at 1000°C. The energy
for vacancy formation is 0.9 eV/atom; the atomic weight and density (at 1000°C) for copper are
63.5 g/mol and 8.4 g/cm3, respectively.

3. Determine the composition, in atom percent, of an alloy that consists of 97wt% aluminum and 3wt
% copper.
4. Derive the equation of the weight percent to atomic percent conversion.

5. Metal Alloys at Home: Take a selfie of a metal/metal alloy at home. Indicate function and in 3-5
sentences defend how its characteristics attained its supposed application.

Spoon and fork

Function: These utensils are primarily used for eating.
The spoon and fork are made of stainless steel. That’s why they are hard, rigid, and do not
rust. Stainless steel is resistant to rust because of its composition--chromium, nickel, molybdenum,
titanium, to name a few. Moreover, the addition of the element nickel in the stainless steel adds hardness
to it.
