Task List

Lesson 8 is about Combinatorics and Probability. It highlights how probability

is measured using the cardinality of events and sample spaces. The systematic
approach of counting the sample points of an event is given emphasis.

FIRST QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 7

Lesson 8. COMBINATORICS AND PROBABILITY

Highlights

A. What is Combinatorics?

- Combinatorics is a branch of mathematics in which it deals with the

combinations of objects that belong to a finite set with certain limitations that
are caused by graph theory.

B. State the Multiplication Rule of Counting

- The multiplication rule of counting is where it is a basic counting principle. It

is where there are “a” ways of doing a certain thing, and there are also “b”
ways of doing something, then there are a*b ways on doing both of the
intended action.

C. State the Addition Rule of Counting

- It is also where there are “a” ways of doing something and as well as “b” ways
of doing something, but the difference from the multiplication rule is that both
actions can’t be done at the same time so there are A+B ways to chose one of
the actions.

D. Describe the 2 approaches of defining probability.

Theoretical Approach - It is a method where it expresses a certain event that can

and might happen by dividing the number of the favorable outcomes by the total
amount of given outcomes. It can be expressed as a fraction, or decimal.

Empirical Approach - Also known as relative frequency, or experimental probability,

is a ratio of the number of outcomes where a specific event occurs to the total number
of trials in an actual experiment.
