Lesson 8. COMBINATORICS AND PROBABILITY

Highlights

A. What is Combinatorics?

Combinatorics is an area of mathematics primarily concerned with counting, both as

a means and an end in obtaining results, and certain properties of finite structures.

B. State the Multiplication Rule of Counting

In combinatorics, the rule of product or multiplication principle is a basic counting

principle (a.k.a. the fundamental principle of counting). Stated simply, it is the idea
that if there are a ways of doing something and b ways of doing another thing, then
there are a · b ways of performing both actions.

C. Describe the 2 approaches of defining probability.

FIRST QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 7

The two approaches of defining probability of an event are Theoretical Approach

and Empirical Approach.

The theoretical probability of an event occurring is an "expected" probability based

upon knowledge of the situation. It is the number of favorable outcomes to the
number of possible outcomes.

The empirical probability, relative frequency, or experimental probability of an

event is the ratio of the number of outcomes in which a specified event occurs to
the total number of trials, not in a theoretical sample space but in an actual
experiment.
