6. Diagram 5 shows the zinc brush electroplating. It is used to electroplate zinc onto very large iron
supports of buildings. During the process, the zinc brush spreads a layer of concentrated aqueous
zinc sulphate over the iron surface. After electroplating, a layer of zinc forms on the surface of the
iron support.

Section B [40%]

1. When substance K is dissolved in solvent L, it forms solution M which can conduct electricity and
shows pH value 1 when tested with pH metre. When substance K is dissolved in solvent N, it forms
solution O which cannot conduct electricity and shows pH value 7 when tested with pH metre.
a. Suggest substance K, solvent L, solution M and solvent N. [4 marks]
b. Explain the differences in properties between solution M and solution O. [4 marks]
c. When calcium carbonate chips are added into solution M and solution O, compare the
observations. Write the chemical equation for the reaction occurs. [4 marks]
d. 50 cm3 of 0.1 mol dm-3 solution M is pipetted out and put into a 200 cm 3 volumetric flask to
prepare a standard solution. Distilled water is added into the volumetric flask until it reaches the
calibration mark.
i. Name the process involved and predict the pH value of solution in volumetric flask.

ii. Calculate the concentration of solution prepared in the volumetric flask.[2 marks]
e. A solution P which has the same concentration with solution M has pH value 4. Explain a factor
that cause the pH of solution P to be different with solution M. [2 marks]

2. Salt is a chemical substance formed when the hydrogen ion of an acid is replaced with metallic ion
or ammonium ion.
a. Eggshell, cockles and limestone contain a chemical substance called calcium carbonate salt.
i. State the type of salt in terms of solubility. [1 mark]
ii. Name the reaction to prepare the salt in laboratory. [1 mark]
iii. Describe an experiment to prepare the salt. Your description should include the
following:
 chemical substances used to prepare the salt
 procedure
 ionic equation for the reaction

b. Ammonia is used to produce ammonium fertiliser. Under normal condition of the soil, the
higher the percentage of nitrogen by mass in a fertiliser is, the better the fertiliser will be.
i. If you are given the following fertilisers, decide which fertiliser you should choose to
improve the fertility of soil. [4 marks]

solution, calculate the mass of fertiliser produced. State the reactant that is in excess.
