Interpersonal Communication - Principles

6
Situations in Business Life
Public-speaking is key to building your career and relational
network. It contributes to your image.

▪The majority of your public-speaking

experiences will occur in small and
informal meetings.
▪Sometimes, you might make a
formal speech to a large audience.

7
Be prepared to speak !
▪The bedrock of effective public speaking is self-confidence.
▪It's important to be prepared, physically and mentally.
▪Be calm.
▪Organize your thoughts in an outline or note cards.
▪Identify any opposing points of view that members of your
audience might hold.
▪Start out by stating your purpose, previewing your main
points and making eye contact.

8
Things to concentrate on
▪It's not just what you say in front of the audience that
counts — it's the impression you make.
=> The 3 Vs of Mehrabian
▪Your body language, expressions, gestures and clothing
can speak as loudly as your words.
▪Use your voice and body to enhance your presence and
forge your own public speaking identity.
▪Use examples and statistics.
▪Wrap things up by summarizing your main ideas.

3 open questions..3 minutes…
▪It will happen…with your team at work, at a
wedding party, at a cocktail, …
” please, a speech! “ ... without any preparation.
▪Have in mind : 3 minutes / 3 open questions
– Start listing orally your 3 open questions (like « why
are we here today? », « what are the reasons that for
this event? », « why today, why me .? » …
– Pick up the first question, answer it.
– Perform the same for the two other ones.
– Run your 3 minutes speech – here you are!
