A three – storey reinforced concrete building with roof deck is being design by a structural engineer to withstand wind
loads of 600kN, 450kN and 250kN respectively acting at Roof deck, 3rd floor and 2nd floor.

Using Portal Method Compute for the moment, shear force and axial forces generated by the loads given. Analyzed
Gridlines A, B, G, H, 1, 2, 3 and 4. (Use extra sheet for your solutions)

MOMENT DISTRIBUTION METHOD

1. Determine the reaction for a four span beam having the following properties. First span has a length of 4.5 meters
loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 30kN/m throughout its length and a 40 kN concentrated load acting
2m from the right end, second span has a length of 3.0 m loaded with trapezoidal load throughout the length from
intensity 30 – 60 kN/m starting from the left, third span has a length of 4.0 m loaded with three 50kN load, 1.0m
apart acting symmetrically in the span, and the fourth span has a length of 5.0m loaded throughout the length
with a uniformly varying load from intensity 45 – 0 kN/m starting from the left end.

2. Determine the reaction for a eight span beam having the following properties. First span has a length of 5.0 meters
loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 35kN/m throughout its length, second span with a length of 3.0 m and
load with a 50 kN concentrated load acting 2m from the right end, third span has a length of 3.5 m loaded with a
uniformly distributed load of 20kN/m throughout its length and a 60 kN concentrated load acting 2m from the left
end, fourth span is 5.0m in length and is loaded with a trapezoidal load throughout the length from intensity 50 –
20 kN/m starting from the left, fifth span has a length of 4.0 m loaded with three 40kN load, 1.0m apart acting
symmetrically in the span, the sixth span has a length of 4.5m loaded throughout the length with a uniformly
varying load from intensity 40 – 0 kN/m starting from the right end, and the last span has a length of 6.0 m loaded
throughout the length with a uniform load of 50kN/m and two concentrated loads of 20kN at 2m intervals.
