1. Given a rectangular beam having a width of 300 mm and an effective depth of 500
mm. the beam is reinforced for tension only with a steel area of 3400 sq. m.

𝑓𝑐′ = 21 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝑓𝑦 = 415 𝑀𝑃𝑎
a. Find the ultimate moment capacity of the beam section.
b. Find the uniform ultimate load that the beam can carry in a simple span of 6m.
c. Describe the mode of design.

2. Beam section is b = 300 mm, h = 450 mm. Compressive strength of concrete is 30
MPa, steel strength is 415 MPa. The beam is simply supported on a span of 5m and
carries the following loads:

Superimposed dead load = 16 kN/m

Live Load = 14 kN/m
Steel Covering = 70 mm

a. What is the maximum moment at ultimate condition?

b. Find the number of 16 mm diameter bars required.
