Reflection in Philippine Literature

Philippine literature is literature associated with the Philippines from the past, through its
colonial legacies, and on to the present. As a Filipino, studying our literature presents us with
knowledge about our country. We were able to learn the rich heritage of ideas, our culture, and
traditions, handed down to us by our predecessors. It opens our eyes and makes us see more
than just what the front door shows. With this, we begin to learn, ask questions, and build our
intuitions and instincts helping us to expand our minds.

As we learn our history, we understand ourselves better and take pride in being a
Filipino. Studying our literature is important in our lives because it teaches us to appreciate our
own Filipino Identity as a community and as a nation. From reciting the Lupang Hinirang and
Panunumpa sa Watawat ng Pilipinas during flag ceremonies, it has been dedicated to set our
minds to become nationalistic. The tradition of Buwan ng Wika (language month) every August,
which celebrates our literature, history, and culture through different events like balagtasan,
pageantry, essay, and other forms of performances, helps us to become aware and realize that
we Filipinos have our character and own nation being set free from colonization.

Another significance of studying Philippine literature is it helps us to connect to different

regions, races, societies, and periods. It is a key to empathize and understand other people’s
feelings to take a closer look at the different facets of life aside from what we know and live
which can change perspectives. It is a way to enlighten different ideologies allowing us to
experience different cultures, beliefs, and traditions in our country.

Being a Filipino, we must love and take pride in our culture, by manifesting a deep
concern of our literature through studying and knowing the in-depth meaning of it. We need to
understand that we have a noble tradition which can serve as the means to grasp other culture
of different places in our country. We must have unity and take duty, especially to the new
generation to have peace and order. And we must be proud of our own identity guided by our
literature because it is a treasure of the country we must honor and glorify.
