WORKSHEET 1: TECTONIC ACTIVITIES

The Ring of Fire, also referred to as the Circum-Pacific Belt, is a path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by active
volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. Its length is approximately 40,000 kilometers (24,900 miles). It traces
boundaries between several tectonic plates—including the Pacific, Juan de Fuca, Cocos, Indian-Australian, Nazca,
North American, and Philippine Plates.

Seventy-five percent of Earth’s volcanoes—more than 450 volcanoes—are located along the Ring of Fire. Ninety
percent of Earth’s earthquakes occur along its path, including the planet’s most violent and dramatic seismic events.

Coincidentally, the Philippines is well within the area of the Ring of Fire, that’s why our country is especially
susceptible to the various natural disasters related to seismic activities in this area. One of the more recent of these
disasters is the January 2020 eruption of the Taal Volcano located in Batangas, Philippines.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
The Philippines is prone to natural disasters due to its geographical position. One major factor is its placement in the
Ring of Fire which places it in an area which experiences an increased amount of seismic activities. It is also prone to
weather-based disasters, but we will mostly focus on seismic activities-based disasters. The following are some of
the more recent events experienced here in the Philippines.

TAAL VOLCANO ERUPTION (January, 2020)

A volcano south of the Philippine capital has sent a massive plume of ash and steam spewing miles into the sky and
pushed red-hot lava out of its crater, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people and the closure of Manila's
airport.

In a matter of hours on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level for Taal
Volcano to Level 4 from Level 1 — with Level 5 being the highest. It warned that a larger "explosive eruption" could
occur within hours or days. (https://www.npr.org/2020/01/13/795815351/volcanic-eruption-in-philippines-causes-

MAGNITUDE 6.1 EARTHQUAKE ROCKS LUZON (April, 2019)

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in Luzon, with its epicenter located at Castillejos, Zambales.

the worst provinces hit by this event is Pampanga because it sits on soft sediment.

My Evacuation Plan
I. OBJECTIVE: At the end of the activity, the learner will be able to:
1. create an evacuation plan at home during a(n) earthquake/volcanic eruption/tsunami.

II. MATERIALS:
pen, activity sheet, ruler, pencil
III. PROCEDURES:
1. Create an evacuation plan for your family for an occurrence of natural calamities.
2. Illustrate a map of evacuation route.
Example:

IV. ANALYSIS:
Answer the following questions.
1. What should be your preparations before a(n) earthquake/volcanic eruption/tsunami.

2. What are the important things to be carried when earthquake occurs?

3. Why is important to know the evacuation site during a disaster or a calamity?

4. Are you familiar with the alternative evacuation site? Where is it?

5. What can you propose in case members of the family are not home during a calamity?
