CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of
the study, specification of the product, significance of the study, limitation of the study and
definition of key term. Each of them will be discussed below.

1.1 Background of the Research


1.2 Statement of the Problem
Based on te background of the research above, The researcher formulates the research
problems as follows:

1. What are the targer needs in reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Al –
Muniroh Ujungpangkah especially in descriptive text using PowerPoint media?
2. What are the learning needs in reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Al –
Muniroh Ujungpangkah especially in descriptive text using PowerPoint media?
3. What is the appropriate media using PowerPoint based in reading comprehension
especially in descriptive text of the tenth graders at SMA Al – Muniroh Ujungpangkah?
1.3 Objective of the Research
The Objective of the research can be stated as related with the problems’ statement. The
objectives of this research are:
1. To describe the target needs in reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Al –
Muniroh especially in descriptive text using PowerPoint media
2. To describe the learning needs in reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Al
– Muniroh especially in descriptive text using PowerPoint media
3. To develop appropriate media using PowerPoint based in reading comprehension
especially in descriptive text of the tenth graders at SMA Al – Muniroh Ujungpangkah
1.4 Specification of the Product
In this research, the product will be developed has some specifications. Those
specifications based on teacher’s and student’s need especially in student’s target and
learning needs. The product will also be developed based the exiting textbook and some other
sources suited with curriculum. This media is in the form of mobile application and has
around 30 MB. It is made by using PowerPoint and can be operated on mobile phone using
converting application process and can be operated by installing it first. This media and
component has differences both of teacher and students. For the teacher, in media there are 2
files consist of teacher’s mobile application and instructional guidelines. In teacher’s
component application, there are 3 menu consist of loading, home page and menu page. In
the menu page, there are 5 menu consist of user’s guide, KD, materials, quiz, answer key and
description about application. For the students, in media there is only mobile application. In
the student’s component application same with the teacher’s but no menu answer key. The
product of this media focuses on descriptive text especially in describing place. It is consist of
definition of descriptive text, communicative purpose, generic structure, language feature,
vocabulary building, example, and quiz. In the example of descriptive text, there are 2 form
consist of paragraph/text and conversation of describing place. In the quiz, there are 3 form
consist of multiple choice, find the place, and creating text.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The research is significance on contributing theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the
result of the research is can be used as reference and contributes to development of
knowledge in language teaching especially in reading skill. Practically, this research can
provide fruitful contribution for students, English teacher and future researcher. For the
students, this research is expected to give them more varied process and form of teaching.
The students will also get more knowledge motivation and they needs in learning English.
For the teacher, this research is expected that the media can be useful in the teaching reading
English. It can be developed reading materials based on students need and interest. For the
future researcher, this research will be encouraged to conduct some studies to find new
theories in education.
1.6 Limitation of the Study
In order to avoid a broader discussion of the research, the researcher focus on several
things as follows:
1. Describe the student’s target and learning needs in learning English especially in reading
descriptive text.
2. Developing media using PowerPoint for tenth graders of SMA Al – Muniroh
Ujungpangkah in the second semester in academic year 2020/2021.
3. This research focus on descriptive text especially in describing place for tenth graders of
SMA Al – Muniroh Ujungpangkah in the second semester in academic year 2020/2021.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
To avoid misunderstanding and misconception some terms in this study, the writer defines
several key terms as follows:
1. Developing is a process of adding, deleting, simplifying, modifying, and reordering the
materials in order to be better for students' need. (Syarifuddin, 2018,p.18)
2. Reading is activity of extracting information from a text including picture, diagrams,
graph, and illustration. reading is an activity integrating the text and readers’ background
knowledge to build meaning. (Thompson;1980)
3. Comprehension as “relating aspects of the world including texts to the knowledge,
intentions, and expectations we already have in mind”. (Smith;2004)
4. Reading comprehension is a process of simultaneously extracting and constructing
meaning through interaction and involvement with written language. (Snow, 2001,p,11)
5. Descriptive details mean to grab the reader’s attention. A descriptive text is considered as
the simplest and easiest writing form compared to narrative, recount, or procedure,
particularly for the beginning writers. (Friedman, 2010)
6. PowerPoint is a computer program to present something that is developed by Microsoft
Corporation (Hengky Alexander 2011). PowerPoint is part of Microsoft office application.
For the first time, PowerPoint only used in Xenix operation system but nowadays the user
can use it in windows and Apple Macintosh operation system.
7. Mobile learning is also defined as “the acquisition of any knowledge and skill through use
of mobile technology, anywhere, anytime, which results in an alteration in behavior”
(Geddes, 2004, p.214)
8. That mobile application was Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). (Norita, 2018)
9. MALL refers to mobile technology use for learning language. It originates from mobile
learning (mLearning) and can be seen as a specialization of that field”. (Viberg, O., &
Grönlund, 2013)
10. SMA. Al Muniroh is one of an Islamic Senior High School at Pendidikan Street
No.01, Pendilwesi, Pangkahwetan, Ujungpangkah Gresik.
