Human Reproductive System

Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection that
is caused by the bacteria

Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Spreading
 The infection is usually through vaginal, oral, or
anal sex.

 A pregnant women can pass on the infection

to her unborn infant (eye)
Symptoms
 Half of women with gonorrhea (cervix) do not
have symptoms

 Most infected men with symptoms have

inflammation of the urethra associated with a
burning sensation during urination
 if gonorrhea is left untreated, it may spread
locally, causing inflammation

throughout the body,

affecting joints and heart
valves.
 All people testing positive for gonorrhea

should be tested for

other sexually
transmitted diseases
such as chlamydia, syphilis, and human
immunodeficiency virus
Treatment and Prevention
 No having sex with infected person

 Vaccine

 Antibiotic
Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused
by the bacteria

Treponema pallidum
Spreading
 Syphilis is most commonly spread through sexual
activity

 It can be transmitted via blood products

 It may also be transmitted from mother to baby

during pregnancy or at birth
 It is not generally possible to

contract syphilis through

toilet seats, daily activities, hot tubs, or

sharing eating utensils or clothing
Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of syphilis vary depending
in which of the four stages it presents

(primary, secondary, latent, and

tertiary)
Primary
 Primary syphilis is typically acquired by direct
sexual contact with the infectious

lesions of another person

 a skin lesion (Penis), called a chancre

Secondary
 occurs approximately four to ten weeks after the
primary infection

 symptoms most commonly involve the skin,

mocous membrane, and lymph node
 fever, sore throat, weight loss, hair loss, and
headache
Latent
having serologic proof of infection
without symptoms of disease
Tertiary
 Tertiary syphilis may occur approximately 3 to
15 years after the initial infection

 People with tertiary syphilis are not

infectious
Treatment and
Prevention
 Not having sex with infected person

 Vaccine

 Antibiotics
HIV-Aids
 Human immunodeficiency virus infection and
acquired immune deficiency syndrome
(HIV/AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions caused
by

infection with the HIV

Spreading
 HIV is spread primarily by having sex
 Contaminated blood transfusions and hypodermic
needles
 From mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or
breastfeeding.

 Some bodily fluids, such as saliva and tears do

not transmit HIV
Symptoms
There are three main stages of HIV infection:

acute infection, clinical

latency and AIDS
Acute Infection (4 weeks)
Many individuals develop an influenza-like

illness or can be no specific symptoms.

Clinical Latency (over
three to six months)
 While typically there are few or no symptoms at
first

 Near the end, many people experience

fever, weight loss,

gastrointestinal problems and
muscle pains
Acquired
immunodeficiency
syndrome (AIDS)
 In the absence of specific treatment, around half

of people infected with HIV develop AIDS within

ten years
 Additionally, people with AIDS frequently have
systemic symptoms such as

prolonged fevers, sweats (particularly

at night), swollen lymph nodes, chills,
weakness, and unintended weight loss
Treatment and Preventing
 No having sex

 No blood contact with infected person

 Vaccine

 Medicine
