Old McDonald Had a Farm

Tech ‘n Talk SLPs will be doing full inclusion for ESY services this summer. We will work as a team in each classroom providing a speech and language
oriented lesson to entire classes. We are planning to do lots of singing (and a little bit of dancing) with all of our ESY preschoolers, kindergartners, and
first graders. Our ESY classes have a very diverse population when it comes to types of disabilities, so we needed versatile activities. Many of our
students are either nonverbal or minimally verbal. We have planned some fun interactive activities to use and share with the ESY teachers so they may
continue to build on the skills we are addressing.
One of our themes for the summer is farm animals and the sounds they make. We put together this cute set of materials to use in conjunction with Old
McDonald Had a Farm. (It also is a perfect companion to the Peek-A-Boo Farm app available on iTunes.)
How will we use this? Lots of ways!
As we sing the song, we can stop before naming an animal and a student can choose the animal they want us to sing about. The student can place the
animal of their choice on the blank picture communication board. This allows participation for both our verbal and nonverbal students
After we sing the song we can have students name the animals, or find the animals as we name them.
We can also have one student choose an animal (great task for the nonverbal students), and another student produce the sound the animal makes.
Another activity will be to have students associate animals and their sounds as they listen to us make animal sounds.
• Print one copy of the COVER page and laminate. You will need to cut out the animals blocks from the COVER page to use as the AAC images to ‘stick’
to the page with blank response squares.
• Print one copy of the page with blank response squares and laminate.
• Place Velcro or other adhesive of your choice on the back of each animal picture and in the center of each blank square. Students can stick their
images to the page as they ‘tell’ you which animal they want to sing about, find animals that you name, and/or find animals that go with the animal
sounds you or other students produce.
