Before You Start Your
Ph.D.
So, you’ve finally decided to take up Ph.D.
Well, that is good for you. Getting a Ph.D.
degree is a really good idea unless you know
completely what exactly you are getting into.
I assume you’ve already received a lot of
advice from your friends and colleagues, in-
cluding the internet. However, it is just hard
to focus on who is right and which advice will
work in the long run that is why you’re here.
Before sending your application to your
dream university here are seven things you
should give serious thoughts on. One or more
of these tips will save you from disillusion
and help you prepare before getting a Ph.D.
Tip #1: The option to choose a Ph.D. pro-
gram is yours
Your career center will not set plans for you.
What you’ll get depends on your earnest ef-
forts in finding a Ph.D. program that suits you
best. So take the initiative and consult your
professor or colleagues who have graduated
from your desired Ph.D. program. Leverage
your school website for a list of graduate
school options and apply online if possible.
As far as I know, different universities offer
varying Ph.D. programs focusing on particu-
lar subjects like biology, chemistry, or engi-
neering. Depending on what you’re passion-
ate about, it is up to you which field to focus
on. If you’re lucky, you’ll find scholarship
offers that cover full tuition fee and provide
school allowance.

Tip #2: Getting a Ph.D. is all about doing
an independent research study
Many students don’t realize the importance
of a Ph.D. thesis until they fall head-first dur-
ing their meeting with the supervisor. A Ph.D.
program is not just a mere extension of your
undergraduate course. It’s where you concen-
trate on your area of expertise by developing
an original research study with the goal of
publishing it in the school journal.
Tip #3: Taking a break after graduating
from your undergraduate course gives you
time to think it over
You’re in your senior and your classmates
are asking if you want to take up post-gradu-
ate studies. Most of them are getting a Ph.D.
after graduation so you’re feeling a bit of
pressure. So you told them, “Yes, I also want
to get a Ph.D. degree since it’s also my dream
to become a professor.”
Since you’ve decided to take up Ph.D., you
should have a vision of what topic you’re go-
ing to focus.
As you embark on your Ph.D. journey, ex-
pect that your supervisor will ask about your
potential field of a research study. To avoid
embarrassment, make sure that you’ve re-

searched about your topic well enough to get
positive inputs from your supervisor.
But wait… Is it really what you want right
now or didn’t you just felt challenged be-
cause your friends are getting Ph.D. and
you’re not?
What I’m sure of is that many people ended
up tramping through their Ph.D. journey after
taking off without thinking what lies beyond.
So why the rush? I keep saying that getting
a Ph.D. is not a 50-meter sprint, it is a mar-
athon.
Many successful Ph.D. graduates have
worked for five years before going back to
college. So why don’t you take a break? It
will help you gain a new perspective and
ponder about life-changing decisions.
While it is true that the longer you stay out
of college the harder it is to get back, you can
always choose a career path that still involves
the application of science. Say, for example,
a private organization, policy, and consulting.
Tip #4: You don’t have to stick to your
current area of study
Just because you’re working on a computa-
tional analysis of a new medical formula to
cure HIV does not mean you can’t explore
other areas of your Ph.D. studies.
Your undergraduate course does not dictate
the direction of your Ph.D. program. While
many students opted for the safer path of pur-
suing their previous studies, a lot of others
have explored the undiscovered areas of sci-
ence. So if you’re doing a field research, you
can switch to lab-based research.
The best thing about Ph.D. is that you are in
control of your research and you can do what
you’re passionate about. So when you’re
asked, “Why have you chosen this research
study?” Your answer should not be, “be-
cause I’ve worked so hard in this study for
many years now.”
Try to be more creative and expand your
horizon when necessary. Your passion is al-
ways worth the risk. Who knows you might
stumble upon a unique topic that incorporates
both research.
Tip #5: The location of your University is
very important
One of the few things you’ll have to think
about should be, “Where do I want to study?”
Getting a Ph.D. takes at least four to five
years which means that you must choose
your school wisely.
If you’re the type of person who is always
home-sick, then your best option is your lo-
cal university. Your next move is to inquire
whether your local university offers the
Ph.D. program that you are passionate about.
What if your dream program is not listed in
the options? Are you willing to compromise
and settle for a different study?
For those who dream of studying abroad,
think about your comfort zone. Do you want
to study in big universities in the city or do
you prefer working in remote areas? Imagine
your life in these locations. Can you envision
yourself studying in the area for five years?
Are you prepared to go through the different
cultural challenges that you may encounter as
you push through your studies?
Tip #6: Your finances matter more than
the University’s prestige
It’s probably everyone’s dream to study
in big universities in the U.S. or Australia.
However, you also need to consider your fi-
nances. Do you have the resources to sustain
your international studies? Are you currently
enrolled in a scholarship program or are you
going on a self-funded journey?

in graduate school, your reputation as an in-

Well, these are just a few of the many ques-
tions you’ll encounter once you start your
Ph.D. studies. If you think you’ve mastered
the ability to squeeze in work and academic
after surviving college, getting a Ph.D. will
have you think again.
In a Ph.D. program, time management
will be three times worse than your college.
You’ll have to attend classes, joint seminars,
and meet with your supervisor. Plus you must
have extra time to conduct your research,
analyze data, and write your thesis.
Of course, if you are working you need to
divide your time wisely while sparing a little
time for sleep. If you think you lack organ-
izational & Time Management skills, learn
them and start practicing them. Else drop
your Ph.D. plan right now because even if
you get admission into best universities you
will end up getting your schedule skewed
and will be willing to let go off Ph.D. plan af-
ter investing 1-2 precious year of your career.
So these are the 7 things I want you to think
about before taking up PhD. I’m sure you’re
feeling a little scared right now. But that’s
just how it is.
Getting a PhD is a long and winding jour-
ney. It’s a commitment that can hardly live
up to your expectation – but what makes
it worth trying is the chance to reach your
dream.
If you are really zealous about it, then go
for it. Don’t be afraid on something that can
make you happy 20 years from now. Good

Congratulations! You have just unlocked
a new milestone in your career. Studying
abroad is probably every student’s dream.
You must know how lucky you are forgetting
the chance to go cross-country, meet new col-
leagues, and make new discoveries.
I assume you’re very excited to pack your
things and settle in a new place. But wait…
Getting a Ph.D. abroad has become increas-
ingly competitive for international students,
considering the stricter VISA regulations,
application procedures, and higher university
standards.
Consider this – you will be away from your
comfort zone and you might face unexpected
obstacles along your journey. Are you really
ready for that?
Before embarking on a new journey, I have
compiled the 10 most important tips for suc-
cess when getting a Ph.D. abroad i.e out of
India . There are more than 100,000 students
from BioTecNika who have to succeed in
their Ph.D. journey abroad using these tips
and I want to share them with you because I
want you to succeed too.
Tip 1: Inform your supervisor regarding
your arrival
When getting a Ph.D. abroad, you can’t ex-
pect someone to prepare everything for you.
It has been a tradition for every student to
take the initiative in contacting their supervi-
sors and panel members.
So I highly suggest to email your supervisor
a week or at least three days ahead of your
flight. Ask about the best time to schedule a
meeting with them, including the panel mem-
bers.
If you don’t receive a response within two
days, don’t be afraid to follow up. If you have
their contact number, give them a call or send
them a message. This is also a way of allow-
ing students to build a good relationship with
their mentors and become comfortable.
Tip 2: Research about the cost of living
Remember you are going to stay in the
country for a long long time hence always
keep a tab of the cost of living there. For ex-
ample, living in Australia, particularly in big
cities like Sydney can be very expensive. It
is important that you have a budget forecast
so you don’t run out of money. Research on
things like the cost of your apartment, food,
and transportation.
Try to know low-cost places that you can
eat and budget malls if you want to buy a few
things for your first month. Remember, for
those who are on a scholarship it can take
weeks before your allowance comes through.
For those who are enrolled in a self-funded
Ph.D. program, you need to have a stringent
financial discipline in order to survive a se-
mester.
Tip 3: Book your accommodation ahead
of time
Don’t go abroad if you have not booked an
apartment to stay at least three weeks before

Step one of the admissions procedure is that
the Expression of Interest (EOI) stage. In this
phase, applicants fill in an EOI form Online.
The EOI stage for the December 2018 in-
take is now in progress.
Please click the Expression of Interest
(EOI) Form to let us to adequately evaluate
your background, academic record and re-
search pursuits. If your EOI form is shown
to be suitable, you’ll get an email indicating
you’re in a position to proceed to Step 2 of
this application stage.
If your EOI Form is found to be appropri-
ate, you’ll have to download and complete
the full application form, Form A. Candidates
who are successful in this EOI phase will be
encouraged to go Step-2 once the EOI stage
is finished. Contained inside this invitation
email is going to be a unique Form A Number
(FAN). This email will be sent only after the
EOI phase is finished
Step 2: Form A
If your EOI form is found to be appropriate,
you’ll be informed via email and you’ll be
given a unique FAN number. You will need
the FAN number to upload your Form-A on-
line. At this point you’ll have to upload your
transcripts, publications, certificates, etc and
make project choices too. For logging into
the Form A website, use your distinctive
Form A Number (FAN). Don’t give this FAN
to anybody else. It’s for your use only. In ad-
dition, you may use your FAN merely once.
In the website, you’ll have to upload your
Form A in addition to copies of all your ac-
ademic transcripts, publications GATE score
sheet, along with other supportive documen-
tation. Remember again that you’ll just have
one chance to utilize your FAN to login into
the website to upload all your documentation
linked to the applications-process.
So it’s going to be optimal if you accumu-
late all documentation concerning your appli-
cation before going to the website.
Step 3: Short-listing for Interview
In case your Form-A is proven to be suita-
ble, you’ll be informed via email and you’re
going to get an interview invitation.
The Interview short-list will be declared
only after the Form-A phase is complete.
Step 4: Evidence and Powerful Candi-
dates

Hennessey Microbiology Fellowship has

A Brief Note About Dr Terry Hennessey:
Terry Hennessey qualified in Medicine at
Oxford University where he was awarded a
Doctor of Medicine for his research on anti-
biotic-resistant on enterobacteria (undertaken
with Dr Naomi Datta in the Royal Postgrad-
uate Medical School). Keenly aware of the
requirement to take into account the severe
threat posed by drug-resistant infections,
Terry joined Imperial Chemical Industries
Pharmaceuticals (now a part of AstraZeneca)
where he pioneered a vast range of in vitro
and in vivo tests necessary for the discov-
ery and development of novel antibacterial
agents. Together with his medical back-
ground, scientific excellence and natural
authority Terry had a broad global network.
Ever a Francophile, Terry’s team comprised a
highly professional group of chemists in ICI’s
research lab in Reims. Notable among Terry’s
accomplishments at ICI was the development
of chlorhexidine as’Corsodyl’ in dental hy-
giene, along with the novel broad-spectrum
β-lactam meropenem (initially developed by
Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. Ltd.).

Applicants for admission to the Ph.D. Pro-
gramme will be classified under any one of
these categories that will be determined and

A) Masters degree or equivalent in respec-
tive discipline with a minimum Cumulative
Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.00 on a 10
point scale or equivalent as determined from
the Institute where letter grades are granted;
or 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/
semesters) where marks are given, for the
GENERAL (UR) category and qualified na-
tional level graduate entrance test: GATE/
UGC‐NET/CSIR‐NET or equal or holding a
national level fellowship. The condition for
national level graduate admission test isn’t
applicable to sponsored full‐time and part‐
time research candidates.
Nominees with a postgraduate degree in
professional courses could be admitted with
institute assistantship. The condition of
GATE / NET eligibility isn’t mandatory.
The admission eligibility requirements
could be relaxed to 5.5 on a 10 point scale or
equivalent, or to 55 percent marks to SC/ST/
PD applicants with Master’s degree or equiv-
alent degree.
