Character Conversation
Ms. Ain Good morning, Ms Jane and Ms Tina. We are very honored to invite you to
accept this interview about online learning.

Ms. Jane Good morning, Ms Ain.

Ms. Tina Good morning, thanks to the English Club for inviting us.

Ms. Ain First of all, can you introduce what is online learning?

Ms. Jane In a traditional classroom, you often learn by listening, reading, writing, and
doing other activities designed by your lecturer. Online learning is different
because you are not in the same location as your lecturer or the other
students. In fact, you probably will never meet your lecturer or fellow
students in person. Format of online learning is very flexible for busy
schedules. Students can often log on to the course at any time of the day
(or night). Computer skills and determination are necessary to be
successful. Students need keyboarding skills and must be able to write so
that others can understand.

Ms. Ain Thank you Ms Jane for your explanation. Ms. Tina, is there anything else
can you add?
Ms. Tina For the online learning, students "attend" class by visiting the class web
pages. They complete assignments according to the class schedule.
Students communicate with the lecturer and classmates using e-mail and
online discussion forums. Online students may have more contact with their
fellow students online than they would in the regular classroom. There are
many ways for students to interact online: discussion boards, e-mail, and
group activities. It can be fun to meet students. It can also be a great way to
broaden your learning experience.

Ms. Ain Thanks Ms Tina.

Ms. Ain How do I adapt a face-to-face course to online?
Ms. Jane Many lecturers are being asked to adapt their face-to-face courses to an
online environment do not have sufficient training do so. This commentary
shares challenges faced by lecturers adapting courses from face-to-face to
online, best practices, and common mistakes.
Ms. Ain Next, can Ms Tina explain how do I motivate and engage in an online
environment?
Ms. Tina By Eileen A. O’Cannor and Jelia Domingo in Journal of Educational
Technology Systems, based on many years experience, the authors
suggest educationally productive, research-supported ways to create
learning environments that can motivate, engage, and educate participants
in an online environment. Scroll down to the section titled “General
Application” to find ideas related to “ice breakers” and community
interactions, bringing in external speakers, virtual poster sessions, role
playing, shared problem-solving, and more.
Ms. Ain Can I know how can I ensure quality of participation?
Ms. Jane Participation in an online course calls for interaction with the materials,
students, and the lecturer. The entry digs into why intuitive communication
and navigation is necessary for quality participation, as well as different
hands-on and hands-off approaches for instructors to implement from the
beginning.
Ms. Ain Thank you, Ms Jane.
Ms. Ain How can I understand what type of learner my student is in an online
course?
Ms. Tina For this question, teaching an online course might require lecturers to re-
learn the individual preferences of each student. This entry goes over
various tools lecturers can use to gain that understanding, such as polls,
surveys, and drawing tools, not only so that courses become student-
centered, but also student retention and skill increase.
Ms. Ain How can I provide support for students with emotional and behavioral
disabilities in the online environment?
Ms. Jane Technology use creates new natural environments for social participation
and new rules for social interaction and it has been theorized that students
with emotional and behavioral disorders will not do as well socially in online
environments. This study studied different types of online social skill
instruction and found that they were effective at increasing students’
identification of problem behaviors in an online environment. Implications
for the incorporation of this instruction into social skills interventions are
discussed.
Ms Ain How can I prepare students for the real world through online learning?
Ms. Tina Many courses developed to prepare students for the real world have begun
to help learners develop emotional intelligence competencies such as
emotional self-control, conflict management, teamwork, cultural awareness,
and inspirational leadership. This article proposes specific course design
and instructional strategies that can foster emotional intelligence in an
online learning environment.
Ms. Ain What if I still need my students to participate in service learning? How do I
do that in an online environment?
Ms. Jane According to the “Facilitating Service Learning in the Online Technical
Communication Classroom,” by Danielle Nielsen, drawing from the author’s
experience teaching online technical communication courses with a service-
learning component, this article addresses courses where students are
required to find service opportunities. The author argues that by
implementing service learning into online classrooms and requiring students
to locate their own opportunities, students not only build a greater sense of
civic engagement because they also develop a greater sense of
responsibility for their own education and the coursework they undertake.
Ms. Ain Besides that, can I know, what are the key factors for making an online
learning effective?
Ms. Tina Alright, When we talk about online learning, it is essential to distinguish
what type of online courses we are considering. The big dividing line is
between credit-bearing online courses offered as part of a degree program
and noncredit online courses that result in a certificate or other
nontraditional credential. In general, although this is changing, credit-
bearing online courses tend to mirror the size and costs of residential (face-
to-face) courses. Noncredit online courses can enroll many more learners
(sometimes in the hundreds of thousands, but usually much less) and are
often (although not always) considerably less expensive. For either online
course scenario, credit-bearing or noncredit, what is most important is that
the design of the online course achieves its goals. To judge success, we
need to know what job the learner is hiring that course to accomplish.
These goals will be different between and within various credit-bearing and
noncredit online courses.
Ms. Jane For my opinion, If I had to pick one factor that drives online courses'
success, I would say engagement. If a learner is not engaged in the course,
their fellow learners, and the educator leading the course, then the learning
will not occur.
Ms. Ain Wow, thank you for such a detailed answer.
Ms. Ain Now that there are so many discussions about online learning, what are the
benefits of online learning? Can you share a few with everyone?
Ms. Jane Although many people still consider traditional universities as the best way
to achieve knowledge and get a diploma, online learning proves to be a
great alternative. Students have the chance to study in their own time and
especially for free. It represents a great way to study many fields and to
boost the level of self-motivation. Online learning is so effective because
students can finish their homework quickly, and there is more time left for
hobbies or for finding a job. An access to all resources of a traditional
course helps participants learn wherever they are, leaving them the
freedom to choose the time for study. With basically an Internet connection,
a person can attend different courses. Among the advantages of online
learning there are the responsibility and self-discipline of students. This is
my opinion about benefit of online learning.
Ms. Tina In my opinion, online learning can to cultivate self-discipline and
responsibility. Who says that having to be more self-disciplined is a
disadvantage? It is true that studying online requires more self-motivation
and time-management skills, because you will spend a lot of time on your
own without someone physically close to keep you focused on deadlines.
Look at it this way: your online course will not only teach you geology or
poetry, it will also help you become more self-motivated, a trait that will
make you stand out in the workplace and beyond. It will look great on your
resume.
Not only that, online learning have more choice of course topics. When
thinking about what to study, besides for interest and career
opportunities, where to study is also a deciding factor. This may limit the
choice of subjects or courses to take. Studying online at your own
convenience allows you to no longer worry about class location when
choosing what to learn next. By taking an online course, you can really
focus on the subject you are interested in and choose from the variety of
online courses and programs.
Ms. Ain You have share so many advantages. So, is there any harm in online
learning?
Ms. Jane Of course there are disadvantages of online learning.
Ms. Ain So can you share with us the disadvantages of taking online learning.
Ms. Jane Disadvantages of taking online learning is only in a small group a person
can develop properly. At school, students learn how to make friends, be
patient, get rid of disappointment, and especially to compete. Competition
between colleagues can be very stimulating and students will only benefit
from it. Online learning cannot offer human interaction.
Another disadvantage refers to the fact that online courses cannot cope
with thousands of students that try to join discussions. Also, online learning
can be difficult, if it is meant for disciplines that involve practice.
Ms. Tina For me, the disadvantages is cheating prevention during online
assessments is complicated. Compared to on-campus students, online
students can cheat on assessments more easily as they take assessments
in their own environment and while using their personal computer. The
students cannot be directly observed during assessments without a video
feed, making cheat detection during online assessments more complicated
than for traditional testing procedures. Additionally, without a proper identity
verification system in place, students taking online assessments might be
able to let a third party take the assessment instead of themselves,
resulting in a wholly fraudulent test result.
Ms. Ain After sharing the advantages and disadvantages of online learning, what is
the problems faced by the students in online learning?
Ms. Jane One of the biggest challenges is that most online learning is one-way
communication. There’s no interaction between learner and teacher. The
experience will be very different and that transition can be difficult for many
learners. The second problem with online learning is motivation. I also ask
my students about the feeling of online learning. And I know that some
online learning courses can get boring, while some can be difficult to get
started with. The most difficult thing is that there are no peers or teachers
who can motivate you to keep going.
Ms. Tina As far as I understand, the third problem is the risk of isolation. While online
learning is great at an individual level for its self-paced approach, it
physically isolates you from other learners. The problem with physical
isolation is that there is no direct knowledge sharing. There may be forums
and online communities related to the topic you are pursuing, but
sometimes these are not as active as you’d like them to be.
Ms. Ain Is there any way to solve the students’ current difficulties?
Ms. Jane Yes, it has some tips to overcome the problems. To overcome these issues
with online learning, the best approach is to mix and match your
approaches. This means that rather than relying on online learning for your
transformation, instead mix online learning, classroom settings, reading and
even events and networking. This is where blended learning comes in.
Blended learning or personalised learning is not only a great approach to
overcome the problems we may face with online learning, but it also helps
in your transition to online learning with the support of teachers and the
learning community.
Ms. Tina Furthermore, with the help of teachers or facilitators and the learning
community, you can gain the right support and advice to reduce content
clutter. You’ll also be able to keep up to date on the content.
Ms. Ain The interview is about to end, can you summarize the online learning?
Ms. Jane Yes, in conclusion, online learning has been an amazing advancement. I
find it extremely useful because of the time constraints I face with business
on a daily basis. Not all of the above observations may relate to you, or
there might be other problems you have faced with online learning that I
have not listed. The point is, even though it isn’t perfect, it is an amazing
addition to our learning and towards our transformation for tomorrow.

Ms. Tina In conclusion, online manner of education has both pros and cons. In my
mind, online learning is necessary for humans due to it relieves and
accelerates a method to deepen themselves skills.
Ms. Ain Before the end of the interview, thank you very much for sharing so much
content with us. I believe everyone must have learned a lot about online
learning. Thank you again.
Ms. Jane You’re welcome, we are very happy to accept your interview. And we hope
today’s sharing can be benefit to everyone.
Ms. Tina We hope today’s sharing can be benefit to everyone.
Ms. Ain Today’s interview ends here. I hope I can see you again next time. Thank
you so much and goodbye.
Ms. Jane Thank you, bye.
