Teaching is more than checking off a checklist. Teaching is both science and art. It is ever
changing and blending. Teaching is a complex art.
“The quality of the teacher is the number one factor in learning”. The number one factor of the
achievement of students is the quality of the teacher. If you raise teacher pedagogical skill, then
you will also raise student achievement. *Raise the bar of all teachers to increase student
achievement.

Leadership actions impact teacher actions which impact student’s achievement.
The artist’s product continues to get better over time. The same applies to teachers. Our craft is
never complete we are continually working to change what we already must make turn it into
something greater.
Common language of teaching is a clear way of thinking about teaching and learning. It is a way
of thinking about teaching and learning. Allows for better collaboration to continuously improve
instructional practices. It helps to build a cultural “this is how we do it”. It is important and
meaningful dialog.
Three Categories of Instructional Practice
1. Feedback
a. Specific information provided to and from the teacher and learner to clarify and
guide learning.
2. Content
a. The ways in which lessons typically progress from direct instruction through use
and review of the knowledge and skills being learned.
3. Context
a. Addressing the psychological needs of students-things like engagement, a sense
of belonging, high expectations. *This is the “art” part that is going to look
different from teacher to teacher.
Ten Design Areas with guiding questions teachers ask themselves as they are planning
1. Providing and communicating clear learning goals.
2. Assessment
3. Direct instruction
4. Practicing and deepening
5. Knowledge application
6. Strategies that appear in all types of lessons
7. Engagement
8. Rules and procedures
9. Relationships
10. Communicating high expectations
Instructional elements=categories of classroom practice that have a clear and consistent effect
on learning. *There is no guarantee that these will work all the time with the same students.
Use multiple strategies to accommodate all student learning needs.
Strategies are the ways teachers choose to enact an element in their classroom. Different
students need different strategies.
Successful educators are first and foremost learners who have a teachable spirit and are
constantly looking to add to their skills in the craft of teaching and learning.
Keys to remember:
 Everyone brings some strengths of practice to this work.
 You must continue to grow your skills and add to your instructional toolbox over time.
 The 43 elements provide a buffet of choices for continued growth.
 Create a system that ensures teacher development.
 Common language.
 Teachers set individual teacher growth goals on a yearly basis based on the instructional
model.
 Provide opportunities for observing and discussing effective teaching.
Quality planning=using instructional strategies to develop connected units. Use blended
instruction. Ensure a guaranteed and viable curriculum involving cognitive and metacognitive
skills. Rely on classroom measurement. Change report cards to demonstrate students’ status and
growth-start point and endpoint.
Takeaways: Teaching is more than checking off a checklist. Teaching is both science and art. It
is ever changing and blending. I loved this quote, “The quality of the teacher is the number one
factor in learning”. We as educators need to raise the bar to increase student achievement. And
finally, the artist’s product continues to get better over time. The same applies to teachers. Our
