QUESTION 1

a) Describe two assumptions that can be made in frictional rolling problems.

b) There are several sources of works available in the analysis of works and energies of
rigid body. State TWO (2) of them with their equations AND simple illustrations.

QUESTION 2

a) As shown in Figure Q2, the 5-kg paper roll is pin supported at both ends by brackets
AB. The roll rests on the floor, for which the coefficient of kinetic friction is µk = 0.2. If a
force of 80 N is applied to the end of the paper, determine
i) the angular acceleration as the paper unrolls,
ii) the force exerted on brackets AB, and
iii) the angular velocity after 1.5 revolutions.

QUESTION 3

a) As shown in Figure Q3, wheel A, with a mass of 25 kg and a radius of gyration of kO =

150 mm, is connected to motor M via a belt system and is pulling block B using a rope
winded to the inner radius starting from rest. If motor M is producing a moment of 75
N/m to the wheel, determine the velocity of the 100-kg block B after wheel A has turned
5 revolutions. Neglect the mass of the pulley attached to the motor.
