Digital tools and resources represent a variety of technologies to augment and

restructure student learning including social learning applications, content applications,
support applications, communication tools, productivity tools, and the like.

What do you think is the purpose of technology in education? How would you describe
the transformation of education in the Philippines?

Technology can enhance a teacher-student relationship. Technology is highly integrated

nowadays with teachers. Technology is an effective tool to communicate between teachers and
students that makes their learning fun and interactive. Technology is also a primary tool that can help
them to collaborate with their classmates so that they can share and give ideas that can help them to
boost their ability.

In the past few years, technology plays an important role in the system of education. It lessens
the burden of different teaching personnel to teach and demonstrate the learnings that their students
need to acquire. Innovating the education system with the help of technology can boost the student’s
ability to be globally competitive in their chosen fields. Different institution adapts the changes in
technology because first, teachers and students are demanding on it. Students and teachers are now
engaging in it in a sense that they can learn even outside their classroom and learn via their gadget.
Technology is part of the necessity for the learning environment. Especially, during this hard time,
education is being conducted thru online that is why everyone must have a learning material.

Here in the Philippines, the education system has undergone several transformations. One of
the major examples of this change or transformation is the k-12 curriculum. The implementation of
this new curriculum is an indication of the changes in the education system in the Philippines. Some
say it is a big help for the student because they have sufficient time to think about what course they
are going to. Also, it elevates the education system into a higher level that makes the students globally
competitive. Nonetheless, we need to look on the brighter side of this transformation that students can
be globally competitive, and we can assure that the education system here in the Philippines steps up
to a higher level.

As a PhD student, how do you assess the readiness of the Philippine education sector in
the implementation of technology in schools? Discuss common challenges that you think are
being faced by different public and private schools today. Identify and discuss solutions to
address these challenges.

Implementation of technology to different schools or institutions is still a challenge even thou

they are integrated into education. Even though they have all the available resources such as trained

teaching personnel, favorable policies, ready access to education, but implementing this is not that
easy. Here in the Philippines, the education system faces different challenges in implementing
technology are the following:

First, lack of budget. The Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher
Education (CHED) admit that their sectors are lacking the budget of putting technologies that can help
the students to acquire the learnings they need. Traditional way of learning is still effective, but
knowing that different countries are now engaging, innovating, and investing in technology for their
educational system is a big advantage for them. Here in the Philippines, some private schools are now
investing in this, but how about public schools? There are some public schools that they need to
conduct their lessons outside because there are no sufficient facilities that can cater to the number of
students. Also, they lack facilities and learning resources such as books, journals, and the likes. I think
the best way to address this is the government should invest more in the education system here in the
Philippines. Improve facilities and give sufficient budget for learning materials, invest, and engage in
technology. By this, the education system can keep up globally.

Second, weak to no connection. Different technology will be useless without a different

internet service provider. All the information being introduced to the system is mostly coming from
the internet which is it needs connection. Some internet provider is expensive that not all can afford.
Sadly, here in the Philippines, not everyone has the access to the internet because they lack money to
fund the monthly bill. Different provinces, especially public schools cannot experience nor access
internet connection because of its location. But the great way to resolve this is by employing
strengthening the signal and internet connection utilizing even the community in the remote areas can
access and have a good connection that they can use in learning.

Some teachers find it difficult to use technology in teaching and they still believe in the
traditional way of teaching-learning. However, technology keeps the students engage in learning
although students have a very short attention span when it comes to learning. Students of this
generation are now tech-savvy. They interact more on their gadgets rather than their textbook or
journals. Which means they learn more and technology helps them to do that.

The above-mentioned challenges, specifically the challenges encountered in public schools

can be solved with the help of different stakeholders and LGUs most specially in terms of funding. In
addition, the public schools now have a MOOE budget where in the schools can provide an internet
facility to teachers and learners, however it depends on the school if they can set a budget for that.

In line with our current situation, teacher capability trainings were provided in using
technologies in teaching to address the needs of teachers so they can deliver their lessons more
effectively in this what we called THE NEW NORMAL.
