C. Learning Materials
1. BIOTECHNOLOGY DEFINITION
Biotechnology comes from two words namely the word Bio and
the word Technology. The word Bio can be interpreted as life while the
word Technology is interpreted as a scientific method used to achieve
practical goals.
2. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
The main features of biotechnology, including: There are
biological objects for example in the form of microorganisms, plants
and animals, the use of technology and industry and products or
services.
3. TYPES OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
We can divide the types of biotechnology into 2 (two) categories,
based on the utilization of the technology and the field of its utilization.
A. Based on the Utilization of the Technology.
Based on the utilization of the technology, biotechnology is divided
into 2 (two) parts, namely:
1. Conventional Biotechnology.
Utilization of biotechnology is only based on existing
experiences, the equipment used is still very simple and is carried out
on a small scale. This method was used by our ancestors and passed
down to the present, for example making tape and tempeh which are
both food ingredients originating from Indonesia which actually
contains scientific principles, namely the principle of anaerobic
respiration of a microorganism. In addition, other food products as a
result of the use of microorganisms in the concept of biotechnology
include: beer, bread, cheese and yogurt that have been known since
the 19th century through the fermentation process of various types of
microorganisms. Plant breeding carried out by ancestors is also one
form of utilization of biotechnology in agriculture. In the medical
field, the application of biotechnology in the past can be seen from the
products in the form of the discovery of vaccines, antibiotics and
insulin.
2. Modern Biotechnology
The most striking difference between conventional and modern
biotechnology is the application of scientific principles, using more
modern equipment and practiced on a large scale. Modern bioreactors
were developed using principles of genetics and molecular biology.
Examples of the use of modern biotechnology include genetic
engineering, such as seedless watermelons. Another example of
modern biotechnology is the use of enzymes in cutting DNA chains
with the aim of changing the genetic makeup of information carriers
of inherited physical traits.
4. NEGATIVE IMPACT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
a. Damage to the ecosystem
b. The loss of certain types of animals and plants
c. Can cause allergies
d. The occurrence of biological pollution
D. Learning Model and Method
1. Learning model : Direct Instruction (DI) model
2. Learning method: Discussion and presentation
