PROBLEMS for Orifice and weirs (PART 1 OF 2):

1. A volumetric tank 1.2m in diameter and 1.5m high was filled with oil in 16 minutes and
34.2 secs. What is the average discharge.
2. A weight tank receives 7.65 kg of liquid having Gs of 0.86 in 14.9 seconds. What is the
flow rate in liters/minute.
3. Calculate the discharge in liters per second through a 100-mm diameter orifice under a
head of 5.5m of water. Assume Cc = 0.61 and Cv = 0.98
4. Calculate the discharge through the 140mm diameter orifice shown. Assume C = 0.62.
5. An open cylindrical tank, 2.4m in diameter and 6m tall has 1m of glycerin (Sg = 1.5), 2.5m
of water, and 1.5 m oil (So = .82) Determine the discharge through the 125mm diameter
located at the bottom of the tank. Assume C = 0.65.
6. A calibration test of a 12.5mm diameter circular sharp-edge orifice in a vertical side of a
large tank showed a discharge of 590N of water in 81 secs at a constant head of 4.7m.
Measurement of the jet showed that it traveled 2.35m horizontally while dropping
300mm. Compute the three orifice coefficients.
7. An open cylindrical tank 4m in diameter and 10m high contains 6m of water and 4m of
oil (Gs = 0.8). Find the time to empty the tank through a 100mm diameter orifice at the
bottom. Assume Cc = 0.9 and Cv = 0.98
8. A composite non-prismatic 5m high cylindrical tank shown has a frustum of a cone at
the bottom with upper base diameter 2.5m, 1.25m diameter at the bottom, and 4m
high. The bottom contains 100mm diameter sharp edged orifice with coefficient of
discharge of 0.60. If fully filled to the top, determine the time to empty the tank in
minutes.
9. In the figure shown, how long does it take to raise the water surface in the tank by 2m.
The right side of the figure is a large reservoir of constant water surface elevation.
10. During a test on a 2.4m suppressed weir 900mm high, the head was maintained
constant 300mm. In 38 seconds, 28,800 liters of water were collected. What is the weir
factor, Cw?
11. A rectangular suppressed weir of length 1m is constructed or cut at the top of a tall
rectangular tank having a horizontal section 20mx20m. If the initial head over the weir
is 1m, compute the time required to discharge 72 cu. m. of water. Use Francis formula.
12. A v-notch weir is located or cut at one end of a tank having a horizontal square section
10m by 10m. If the initial head on the weir is 1.2m and it takes 375 seconds to discharge
100m3 of water, what could have been the vertex angle of the weir. Use C = 0.60.
