 Two periods are integrated in regular time-table for aptitude test training and skills development in the
additional Do It Yourself (DYI) lab in all the departments

 Entrepreneurship Development Cell to groom young entrepreneurs. Any servicing opportunity is given
to the students for experience and entrepreneurship development.
 Mock Interview was conducted by a team of expert HRs on 08/10/2017.
 Training is provided in industrial simulation, aptitude and communication skills
 Several Job oriented and placement assistance programmes were conducted.

 Training is provided in industrial simulation in theDo It Yourself (DYI)lab.
 Industries having interactions with the institution provide training by HR Managers
 Students sent for Industrial visits, survey camps and in-plant or industrial training
 Educational tours are arranged for all the students in their respective fields.

2.15PlanofActionby IQAC/Outcome

To improve Results
 Highly qualified and experienced faculty are recruited.
 We conduct Orientation programs and bridge courses to help the freshers to get familiar with all aspects
of their program.
 Synoptic notes are provided in all the subjects.
 Each department has a Do It Yourself (DYI)labin the name of the Father of that department and
students are given training in industrial simulation. For instance, knowledge of the principle of working
of all the home appliances in Michael Faraday Lab (EEE), Mobile servicing in Sir Ambrose Fleming
Lab (ECE), Automobile servicing in James Watt Lab (Mech.) and Computer and Networking in Alan
Turing Lab (CSE).Industry Orientation is done through “Complete Engineer” concept.
 “Gandhian Engineering” concept is inculcated in the students. It aims at “Less Power, More Energy”
and “Economic Innovations”.
 Apart from these labs a Robot Lab is also there to train the students in designing, programming and
operating robots on their own.

 The Best Student and the Best Staff is identified every month. Their names with photos are displayed in
all the notice boards around the college through-out the month and also in the college website. They are
rewarded during the College Day.
 Question Banks with answers are provided in all the subjects.
 Continuous assessment enables effective performance of the student. During a semester, two
Internal Assessment tests and a Model Exam are conducted, as per the University criteria.
 The students are provided with feed-back, individual counseling and guidance on the mistakes they had
committed in the Assessment tests, when the test papers are distributed to them.
 Every day from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm “Doubt Clearance Hour (DCH) is conducted. The students are
allowed to choose and attend the class for the subject they find difficult to understand and clarify their
doubts.
 The summary of Internal Assessments, University Marks, and periodical attendance percentage are sent
to the Parents to improve the performance of the students.
 Every month the Academic Committee meeting is conducted by the HoDs of the respective
departments with the student members from each year and each class. The feed-back given by the
students on each subject and the faculty is conveyed to the Principal for further corrective measures to
be taken.
 The students are split into above average, average, slow learners and they are trained and more
attention is paid to slow learners.
 Result Analysis is made based on the University Results of each semester and meeting was conducted
by the AAAC (Academic and Administrative Audit Committee) with all the staff regarding the result
and the measures to be taken to improve it.
 Remedial and special coaching classes are conducted after the results of the Internal Assessment test
were declared, especially for the slow learners.
 Wi-fi accessibility is available for the students which makes it possible for them to do efficient
reference work and there-by improve their academic performance.
 The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering organized a one day Workshop
on15/07/2016, workshop on “Embedded systems hands-on training” by Mr. Bharani, VNS
Automation solutions.

 The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a workshop on TQM, 5S techniques,
which is a management philosophy that seeks to integrate all organizational functions, on
16/07/2016 with the Technical Head for M/s. CADD Centre Training Services, Mr.
R.Radhakrishnan, as the Resource Person.
 One day workshop entitled “Project Management Using PPM Concept” was organized for
Civil Engineering students on 26/07/2016.

 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized an one day workshop on
29/07/2016, on ORACLE-Green foot Gaming hands-on training”
 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized a programme to
“Commemorate the death anniversary of Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam” on 30/07/2016. Various
programs were conducted to exhibit the students’ talents. They are: Drawing competition,
English Oratorical Competition, Tamil Oratorical Competition and Kavidhai Thoguppu
competition. Also ten speakers were selected for ICTACT youth forum.

 The “Induction Day” programme was organized on 05/08/2016 for the first year students. The
Chief Guest was Dr.J.Sundeep Aanand, Chairman, SLAEC. The students were motivated by the
Chairman and by the Principal, Dr.R.M.Suresh, regarding the Engineering field of study.
 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a one day workshop on
11/08/2016, on “Computer and Networking hands-on training”
 The 70th Independence Day of India was celebrated with utmost joy and happiness to pay a mark
of respect to our freedom fighters because of whom, we are breathing an air of freedom. Flag
hoisting was done at 09.00, followed by Flag Song and National Anthem. A debate among staff
members was conducted at the Auditorium on “The Approach of Staff towards the Students”.

 The “Vivekananda Club” was inaugurated by the Department of Science and Humanities, the
“Tech Club” by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the “Tec-kart Club” by the
Department of Civil Engineering on 08/09/2016, by the Chief Guest Dr. T. Rajagopalan,
Academic Council Member, Bharath University.

 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering inaugurated the “Go Green
Club” by Mr. R. Sundaravadivelu, Deputy Manager of Reliance Group, Alumni of SLAEC, on
09/09/2016.

 The “Hands Together Club” was inaugurated by the Department of Electrical & Electronics
Engineering on 09/09/2016 by Mr.R.Sundaravadivaelu, Alumni of SLAEC.

 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering inaugurated their Sir John
Ambrose Fleming Lab (Father of ECE) on 15/09/ 2016 by the Chief Guest, Mrs.P.Jayashree,
Professor, MIT Campus and Dr. R. Seshadri, Director, CSE, S.V.University, Tirupathi.
 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering also organized a workshop on
15/09/2016 on Mobile Servicing by the final year students for all the other students of all the
departments.
 College Day was organized on 21/10/2016, with Dr.M.Ponnavaiko, Vice chancellor of Bharath
University as the Chief Guest. Students who achieved excellence in academics as well as co-
curricular and sports activities were awarded on this occasion. The teaching and non-teaching
Best Faculty were also rewarded.

 The Muthamizh Mandram conducted various Tamil literary and extra-curricular competitions for
the students on 27/12/2016. They are: Essay Competition, Elocution Competition, Poetry,
Drawing Competition, Tirukkural Recitation Competition, Tongue Twisters and Quiz.
 Mr.M.Ramamoorthy, of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, conducted a
Two Day Workshop on “JAVA footnote ORACLE” on Gaming technologies for the CSE
students.
 The Department of Civil Engineering conducted the Drawing Competition by the Society of Civil
Engineers, on 09/01/2017, and the prizes were distributed to the winners.
 National Youth Day was observed on 12/01/2017, by the first year students by performing "Surya
Namaskaram" on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda's 154th birth anniversary.

 “Republic Day” was celebrated on 26/01/2017. The national flag was hoisted by selected students
and staff, followed by messages by the Principal, Dr. R. M. Suresh. The students and staff also
shared their patriotic feelings and experience.

 The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted a workshop on, “Project Management”
with hands on training on 28/01/2017 by experts from CADD Centre Training Servoices.
 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering established a “Mobile Service
Centre” so as to provide training to all the students at SLAEC in mobile servicing. Moreover, the
final tear students conducted a “Free Service Mela” on “Mobile Servicing” on 17/02/2017 for the
public to utilize the opportunity as well as to make the students perfect through practice.
 One day Workshop on ‘Applications of Total Station in Civil Engineering’ was organized by the
Department of Civil Engineering on 03/02/ 2017.Mr.N.Kathiresan Assistant Business Manager,
Civil – Survey Group, Aimil Ltd. graced the inaugural function as the Chief Guest and keynote
speaker.
 TheDepartment of Electronics and Communication and Department of Computer Science and
Engineering jointly organized a Five Day Workshop on “JAVA Programming” from 09/02/2017
to 15/02/2017 by the Resource Person Mr.E.Sakthidasan, MD, Saks Solutions, Chennai.
 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering inaugurated the “Alan Turing Lab” on
18/02/2017 by Mr.L.N.P.Reddy, Lead Consultant, WIPRO and Mr.T.R.N.Murthy, GM,
Operations, Acrastyle Power (India), Ltd.
 An Inter-departmental Symposium “TRISHUL-2K17” was jointly organized by the Department
of EEE, ECE and CSE, on 18/02/2017. Mr.L.N.P.Reddy, Lead Consultant, WIPRO and
Mr.T.R.N.Murthy, GM, Operations, Acrastyle Power (India), Ltd., were the Chief Guest.

 A three day Workshop was organized by theDepartment of Electronics and Communication
Engineering on “Web Designing & Development” from 30/01/2017 t0 01/02/2017 by Mr.
Sasikumar from Yamee Clusters.
 The Department of Science and Humanities organized several competitions for the students so as
to celebrate the “National Science Day” on 28/02/2017. Mini Project Exhibition, Rangoli, Face
Painting and Quiz with the theme - Science & Technology.
 The International Women’s Day was celebrated on 08/03/2017, with the Principal,
Dr.R.M.Suresh as the Chief Guest, who gave the key note address.
 The 16th College Day and Sports Day were celebrated on 01/04/2017. The Chief Guest was
Dr. J. Hameed Hussain, Dean Engineering, Bharath University. The winners of various
Academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular events were honoured for their excellent
achievements on this day.

To improve Research and Development
Our students are encouraged to participate in various National and Inrternational symposiums,
workshops and conferences conducted by other institutions and also many such events are
organized in our college.
 Mr.M.Riyas of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering won the First prize in
“ADBUZZ” in the National Level Technical Symposium, “X’ZEQT-2K17”, on 04/08/2017,
organized by the Alpha College of Engineering
 Mr. G.Riaz Ahmed of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering won the First prize
in “Paper Presentation” in the Collegiate Technical Symposium, “SRISHTI-17”, on 05/08/2017,
organized by Prince Dr.K.Vasudevan College of Engineering & Technology.
 Mr.Prasanth of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering won the First prize in
“Texhibit” in the Collegiate Technical Symposium, “SRISHTI-17”, on 05/08/2017, organized by
Prince Dr.K.Vasudevan College of Engineering & Technology.
 Mr.R.Srinath of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering won the First prize in
“Texhibit” in the Collegiate Technical Symposium, “SRISHTI-17”, on 05/08/2017, organized by

and Engineeringparticipated in National Level Technical Symposium conducted by Anna University, on

 The “James Watt Laboratory” was established on 25/08/2016 by the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, in order to develop the industry oriented skills and to give more hands on training
on IC Engines to the students.
 A One DayWorkshop and Project Expo on “Automobile Engineering” was conducted by the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, final year students, on 26/08/2016 and 27/08/2016
regarding dismantling and assembling of four stroke two wheeler engine for all the other students
belonging to all the departments.
 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering inaugurated their Sir John
Ambrose Fleming Lab (Father of ECE) on 15/09/ 2016 by the Chief Guest, Mrs.P.Jayashree,
Professor, MIT Campus and Dr. R. Seshadri, Director, CSE, S.V.University, Tirupathi.
 The Engineers’ Day was celebrated on 15/09/2016, with great enthusiasm at SLAEC. Diverse and
novel competitions, technical as well as non-technical, were conducted department-wise on that
day, in order to provide ample opportunity for the students to bloom with the fragrance of
innovative creations. Finally, the winners were rewarded.
 Mr.Karunakaran. K, of final year, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
participated in National Level Technical Symposium conducted by 15/09/2016.
 A lab in the name of Father of EEE department –Michael Faraday lab was established on
22/09/2016 and it was inaugurated by Mr.K.A.P. Jayaraman, an Educationist and Philanthropist.

 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering established a modern
“Robotics Lab” was for training the students in the field of Robotics. A one day workshop on
Robotics was conducted on 03/01/ 2017 by the team of experts with Mr.Rajamanickam, from,
Bits N Watts.

 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering inaugurated the “Alan Turing Lab” on
18/02/2017 by Mr.L.N.P.Reddy, Lead Consultant, WIPRO andMr.T.R.N.Murthy, GM,
Operations, Acrastyle Power (India), Ltd.

 An Inter-departmental Symposium “TRISHUL-2K17” was jointly organized by the Department
of EEE, ECE and CSE, on 18/02/2017. Mr.L.N.P.Reddy, Lead Consultant, WIPRO and
Mr.T.R.N.Murthy, GM, Operations, Acrastyle Power (India), Ltd., were the Chief Guest.
 The inaugural of “John Smeaton Lab” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, on
03/02/2017, by the Guest of Honour, Mr. N. Kathiresan, Assistant Business Manager, Civil
Survey Group, Aimil India Limited, along with our respected Principal, Dr. R. M. Suresh and our
beloved Dean,Dr. P. Subburaj.

 Internal Symposium “ACELIANZ 2k17” was organized, by Society of Civil Engineerson
08/02/2017.Mr. R. Radhakrishnan, Technical Head, CADD Centre was the Chief Guest. The
events such as Paper Presentation, Cad Contest, Code Cracking, Brick Tricks, Model Making,
Multimedia/Short Film, Photography were held during this Symposium and the winners were
awarded.
 The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineeringorganized a workshop on Embedded
Systems on 19/02/2017, by Mr.Vivek, Resource Person.

 The First National Conference on Emerging Trends & Transformations in Engineering and
Technology [NC2(ET)-2017]was organized on 24/03/2017 and 25/03/2017. The Chief Guest was
Dr. V. Thamizh Arasan, Vice Chancellor, Vel's University. A DVD with the proceedings of the
conference was released. Totally fifty six research papers were presented which were keenly
scrutinized and reviewed and shortlisted by research advisors. Extended version of the selected
papers was published in special issue of IETE/IEI. The participants received certificates and the
best presentation was chosen and the scholar was rewarded.

 Mr. M.Ramamoorthy, A.P. of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering published a
paper titled, “Video enhancement for medical and surveillance applications,” in the journal
“Current Medical Review” with an impact factor of 1.3 [Thomson Reuters of Web of Science].
 Mr.A.Vinod of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, published a paper titled,
“Characterizations of plasma sprayed composite coatings over 1020 Mild Steel,” in Annexure I,
Journal, Mechanical Science and Technology.
 Mr. B.Rajadurai and Mr.A.Vinod of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, published a
paper titled, “Finite element modal analysis of composite heavy vehicle chasis using ANSYS”, in
Annexure II Journal, Rasayam Journal of Chemistry.
 Mr.D.Senthilvadivelan of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, presented a paper titled,
“Object manipulation using multiple mobile robot”, in the National Conference on Emerging
Trends and Technology (NC2ET) on 24/03/2017.
 The Department of Mechanical Engineering received Rs.10000/- TNSCST funds for the project

the aptitude skills development classes. The best participants and winners of the various tasks
during the workshops were rewarded.
 “Mock Interview” was organized on 08/10/2016, for the final year students of all the five
departments. It was an ideal way to practice for real job interviews in a situation that mirrors the

 Various “Do It Yourself” labs in the name of the Father of the respective Departments, namely -
Alan Turing Lab, James Watt Lab, John Smeaton Lab, Sir John Ambrose Fleming Lab, Michael
Faraday Lab and the Robotics Lab were established in order to give industry simulation
experience to all the students, in workshops like Mobile Servicing, Web Designing &
Development, Automobile Engineering Workshop & Expo.

Laya Tech Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, from 31/07/2016 to 12/08/2017.
 Final Year Students of ECE Department went on an educational tour to Munnar and Cochin for 1
week from 07/08/2016 to 12/08/2016.
 As per Anna University 2013 Regulation, Survey Camp has been conducted for the students of III
year Civil Engineering for a period of 3 days from 10/08/2016 to 12/08/2016 at Thiruneermalai,
Chennai.During this camp, students gained knowledge on how to implement the survey practices

Engineering was taken for a visit to the Thermal Power Substation, in order to gain knowledge
regarding transmission concepts.

 All the EEE students went on an Industrial visit to VNS Automation on 19/08/16
 The students of Mechanical Engineering were taken for the industrial visit to “AIEMA sourcing
Fair - 2016” from 19/08/2016 & 20/08/2016. Students had seen advanced technology in
composite materials, Robot Welding, Linear Variable Displacement Technique and Special
Projectors. Thus, the students learned the current trend in Industrial Robotics and future

 The Parents Meet Events were organized on 5/3/2017 for the parents of our college students and

 Important University Questions are given in the Internal Assessments so as to make sure that the
students are well aware of the topics and answers, and are thorough in the same.
 Continuous assessment enables effective performance of the student. During a semester two
Internal Assessment tests and a Model Exam are conducted, as per the University criteria.
 The students are provided with feed-back, individual counseling and guidance on the mistakes they had
committed in the Assessment tests, when the test papers are distributed to them.
 Every day from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm Doubt Clearance Hour (DCH) is conducted. The students are
allowed to choose and attend the class for the subject they find difficult to understand.
 The summary of Internal Assessments, University Marks, and periodical attendance percentage are sent
to the Parents to improve the performance of the students.
 Every month the Academic Committee meeting is conducted by the HoDs of the respective
departments with the student members from each year and each class. The feed-back given by the

 The “James Watt Laboratory” was established on 25/08/2016 by the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, in order to develop the industry oriented skills and to give more hands on training on
IC Engines to the students.
 A One Day Workshop and Project Expo on “Automobile Engineering” was conducted by the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, final year students, on 26/08/2016 and 27/08/2016
regarding dismantling and assembling of four stroke two wheeler engine for all the other students
belonging to all the departments.
 The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering inaugurated their Sir John
Ambrose Fleming Lab (Father of ECE) on 15/09/ 2016 by the Chief Guest, Mrs.P.Jayashree,
Professor, MIT Campus and Dr. R. Seshadri, Director, CSE, S.V.University, Tirupathi.
 The Engineers’ Day was celebrated on 15th September 2016, with great enthusiasm at SLAEC.
Diverse and novel competitions, technical as well as non-technical, were conducted department-

Technology [NC2(ET)-2017]was organized on 24/03/2017 and 25/03/2017. The Chief Guest was
Dr. V. ThamizhArasan, Vice Chancellor, Vel's University. A DVD with the proceedings of the
conference was released. Totally fifty six research papers were presented which were reviewed
and shortlisted by research advisors. Extended version of the selected papers was published in
special issue of IETE/IEI. The participants received certificates and the best presentation was
chosen and the scholar was rewarded.

paper titled, “Finite element modal analysis of composite heavy vehicle chasis using ANSYS”, in
Annexure II Journal, Rasayam Journal of Chemistry.
 Mr.D.SenthilVadivelan of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, presented a paper titled,
“Object manipulation using multiple mobile robot”, in the National Conference on Emerging
Trends and Technology (NC2ET) on 24/03/2017.

Day Workshop on “JAVA footnote ORACLE” on Gaming technologies for the CSE students.

Responsibility
 A “Project Expo”was held on 01/10/2016 and 02/10/2016. Students from 45 schools participated
as well as visited the exhibition, which comprised of all the disciplines. Some of the Civil Dept.
projects displayed were Floating Bridge, Sewage Treatment Plant, Smart City, etc.the EEE
students explained the working principle, assembling the causes of malfunction and repairing
techniques for all the basic electrical and electronics home appliances like the refrigerator,
washing machines, fan, Television, mixie, RO system, Air- conditioners, iron box etc.

 An Inter-School Sports Tournamentwas organized by SLAEC, on 01/10/2016 and 02/10/2016,
for all the Higher Secondary schools in Chennai. One of the SLAEC alumni, renowned
Mr. Vignesh Karthick, Vijay TV Anchor, was the Chief Guest on this special occasion.
Competitions in Kho-Kho, Kabaddi and Volley Ball were conducted and cash awards and the
Mahatma Gandhi-Lakshmi Ammal Trophy was awarded to the champions.

 A Ten Day Free Summer Camp - Batch I for +2 passed school students was conducted from
10/04/17 to 24/04/17. Totally120 students participated in this camp under various training
sessions - Robotic Training, Sports Coaching, Web Designing, Personality Development and
Spoken English. All the participants received the certificates and the outstanding students, in
each session were rewarded.

 A Five Day Free Summer Camp - Batch II for +2 passed school students was conducted from
25/04/17 to 29/04/17. Totally 80 Students participated in this camp under various training
sessions - Robotic Training, Sports Coaching, Web Designing, Personality Development and
Spoken English. Outstanding students, in each session were rewarded and all the participants
were given certificates and prizes.

 "Free More Pandal”was organized by SLAEC on 12/5/17 at Tambaram Railway Station.

 S L A E C Digital Library provides online services regarding study materials for all the
departments.
 Student ID cards have holograms of barcode, used for book issue by the Library.
 Title-wise and author-wise Alphabetical card database is provided.
 NPTEL program is commences for the students to expose themselves with great experts of various IIT
Professors. By this they can understand the concepts of the subjects in detail which will in turn reflect
in their results.
 In each session 20 students are allowed to enter the Digital Library to attend the NPTEL programs
based on their subject.
 With the help of PROLIB Software cataloguing has been completed and databases of reading materials
have been created.

5.1 Contribution of IQAC in enhancing awareness about Student Support Services

 The IQAC committee has six student representatives who convey the message on Student
Support Services to other students.
 The information regarding Student Support Services is sent through circulars as well as

6.3.3 Examination and Evaluation

 Open Book Examinations are conducted in the Important University Questions, so as to make sure
that the students are well aware of the topics and answers, and are thorough in the same.
 Every day in the first period the students are made to study a particular subject for 20 min. with the
respective staff clarifying their doubts before the class test.
 Continuous assessment enables effective performance of the student. During a semester two
Internal Assessment tests and a Model Exam are conducted, as per the University criteria.
 The students are provided with feed-back, individual counseling and guidance on the mistakes they
had committed in the Assessment tests, when the test papers are distributed to them.
 Every day from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm special coaching classes are conducted. The students are allowed
to choose and attend the class for the subject they find difficult to understand.
 The summary of Internal Assessments, University Marks, and periodical attendance percentage are
sent to the Parents to improve the performance of the students.
 Every month the Academic Committee meeting is conducted by the HoDs of the respective
departments with the student members from each year and each class. The feed-back given by the
students on each subject and the faculty is conveyed to the Principal for further corrective measures
to be taken.
 The students are split into above average, average, slow learners and they are trained and more
attention is paid to slow learners.
 Result Analysis is made based on the University Results of each semester and meeting was conducted
by the AAAC (Academic and Administrative Audit Committee) with all the staff regarding the result
and the measures to be taken to improve it.

 A One day Workshop and Project Expo on “Automobile Engineering” was conducted by the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, final year students, on 26/08/2016 and 27/08/2016
regarding dismantling and assembling of four stroke two wheeler engine for all the other
students belonging to all the departments.
 The Engineers’ Day was celebrated on 15th September 2016, with great enthusiasm at SLAEC.
Diverse and novel competitions, technical as well as non-technical, were conducted department-
wise on that day, in order to provide ample opportunity for the students to bloom with the
fragrance of innovative creations. Finally, the winners were rewarded.
 An Inter-departmental Symposium “TRISHUL-2K17” was jointly organized by the Department
of EEE, ECE and CSE, on 18/02/2017. Mr.L.N.P.Reddy, Lead Consultant, WIPRO and
Mr.T.R.N.Murthy, GM, Operations, Acrastyle Power (India), Ltd., were the Chief Guest.
 Internal Symposium “ACELIANZ 2k17” was organized, by Society of Civil Engineers on
08/02/2017.
 Mr. R. Radhakrishnan, Technical Head, CADD Centre was the Chief Guest. The events such as
Paper Presentation, Cad Contest, Code Cracking, Brick Tricks, Model Making,
Multimedia/Short Film, Photography were held during this Symposium and the winners were
awarded.
 The Department of Science and Humanities organized several competitions for the students so as
to celebrate the “National Science Day” on 28/02/2017. Mini Project Exhibition, Rangoli, Face
Painting and Quiz with the theme - Science & Technology.
 The First National Conference on Emerging Trends & Transformations in Engineering and
Technology [NC2(ET)-2017]was organized on 24/03/2017 and 25/03/2017.Dr. V.
ThamizhArasan, Vice Chancellor, Vel's University was the Chief Guest. A DVD with the
proceedings of the conference was released. Totally ____ research papers were presented which
were reviewed and shortlisted by research advisors. Extended version of the selected papers was
published in special issue of IETE/IEI. The participants received certificates and the best
presentation was chosen and the scholar was rewarded.
 Each department has a Do It Yourself (DYI)lab in the name of the Father of that department and students
are given training in industrial simulation. For instance, knowledge of the principle of working of all the
home appliances in Michael Faraday Lab (EEE), Mobile servicing in Sir Ambrose Fleming Lab (ECE),
Automobile servicing in James Watt Lab (Mech.) and Computer and Networking in Alan Turing Lab
(CSE). Industry Orientation is done through “Complete Engineer” concept.
 Our students are encouraged to participate in various National and Inrternational symposiums,
workshops and conferences conducted by other institutions and also many such events are
organized in our college.
 Mr. M.Ramamoorthy, A.P. of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering published
a paper titled, “Video enhancement for medical and surveillance applications,” in the journal
“Current Medical Review” with an impact factor of 1.3 [Thomson Reuters of Web of Science].

6.3.5 Library, ICT and physical infrastructure / instrumentation


 The library is open for the students and the staff from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
 The basic concepts of all the subjects, wherever possible, are explained by using NPTEL programs.
 It is upgraded with an additional 1268 Reference and Text Books.
 Barcode technology is used for fast transaction of books. Students’ ID cards are provided
with their bar code.
 ICT enabled techniques are extensively employed by the teachers in all the departments.
 Smart class rooms are equipped with LCD projectors and effectively made use of.

 The QIP (Quality Improvement Programme) is available for the teaching and non-teaching staff.
 On 01/07/2016 and 02/07/2016 a Competency Training Programme was conducted for the
faculty by the Principal, Dr. R. M. Suresh. The faculties were made aware of the various
teaching techniques and their effectiveness. All the teaching and non-teaching faculties
attended this programme.
 A seminar on IEI, India was conducted on the functions, certifications and funded project

20/07/2016 for all the final year students from all the departments, namely, Civil, Mechanical, CSE, EEE

 A HR Orientation Programme was organized on 19/ 08/2016, with Mr. Sri.Allen CEO & Mr.
Sri.Shivin HR Manager, Sans Pareil IT Service Pvt. Ltd. as the resource persons, who trained the

Engineering.
 The Placement and Training Cell organized a “Motivational Seminar” for all the SLAEC
students on 01/09/2016, by Mr.Babu, Ex-Manager RANE Industries Private Ltd, on the “TQM-

 A HR Orientation programme was conducted on 07/10/2016 for the Circuit Branch students and
the first years by the experts Mr. Allen, CEO and Mr. Shivin, HR Manager, from SANS Pareil

 “Mock Interview” was organized on 08/10/2016, for the final year students of all departments.
The HR Managers from various companies were the interviewers who gave the students valuable

Mangala Power Systems, Chennai, Sodexo Technical Service, Chennai, Bharath Electronics Ltd.

Tests. Teachers act as second parents to the students hence they have less problems in that aspect.

“Economic Innovations”.
 Teaching methodology of teaching concepts to be remembered through stories and interesting events or
captions is followed which makes the students learn the concepts in a nutshell.
 The Best Student and the Best Staff is identified every month. Their names with photos are displayed in all
the notice boards around the college through-out the month and also in the college website.
 An IAS/IPS/IFS club has been established to provide coaching for the students to take up these competitive
examinations and also the TNPSC Exam.Two periods are included in the regular time-table for coaching.
 “Kalari” training for the women students was given so as to make them skilled in self-defensive martial arts.
 College Day is celebrated twice a year, at the end of each semester so as to encourage and honour the

2. Goal:

In order to make all the students of SLAEC, Technically sound at the end of his BE Degree
course, with thorough knowledge of the inter-disciplinary concepts necessary for industry
orientation, which will make him absolutely eligible and competent to get placement in the campus
interview or otherwise, by the top recruiters.
3. The Context

In today’s society many believe that the Engineering graduates have no future, as they don’t
have enough career opportunities. But it is not the fact, as the truth is that only the Engineering
graduates who lack the Technical and Communication Skills do not get placement in reputed
companies. This feed-back was received from industry HRs as well as the alumni and their parents.
Hence, it was decided to establish an additional Laboratory in each department in the name of the
Father of that department, which would be called the “Do It Yourself” lab. The new labs will
provide additional work space to the creative and innovative students to encourage innovations. Also
several career Orientation Programmeswere conducted by the resource persons from industries.

4. The Practice

 Every Saturday is exclusively dedicated for industry oriented Technical Skills Development, in the “Do
It Yourself” lab.
 Several workshops and training sessions are also conducted regularly to provide hands on
training to all the students.
 The “James Watt Laboratory” was established on 25/08/2016 by the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, in order to develop the industry oriented skills and to give more hands on training
on IC Engines to the students.

 One day workshop was conducted on TQM, 5S techniques on 16/07/2016 by CAD Centre Chennai to
Mechanical Engineering students.
 Guest Lecture on “TQM-5S”, updating the students with innovative ideas in 5S-Engineering and its
applications by the experts from Mr.K.Babu, Retd.Manager-Production, Rane Engine Valve Ltd.Chennai.

 “Orientation Programme” on ‘Career Opportunities for the Development of Mechanical Engineers in


India’ was by the resource person Mr.M.Arul.,Deputy Manager. SS Power system.Puduchery.
 “HR Orientation Programme,” was done by the experts Mr.Allen, CEO &Mr.Shivin, HR Manager,Sans
Pareil.
 Placement Training was given by a team of expert trainers from Plus 4, on 5th, 6th, 18th, 19th, and 20th
July 2016 for all the final year students from all the departments, namely, Civil, Mechanical, CSE, EEE
and ECE.
5. Evidence of Success
 Workshop on “Mobile Servicing” was conducted by the final year students of ECE department for all
other department students.

Oral presentation on the working technology of recent mobile phones by S. Sathish, II year, ECE.
 The Engineers’ Day was celebrated on 15/09/ 2016, with great enthusiasm at SLAEC. The diverse
and novel competitions, technical as well as non-technical, conducted department-wise on that day
provided ample opportunity for them to bloom with the fragrance of innovative creations. Finally, the
winners were rewarded.

 Workshop was conducted by the final year Mechanical Engineering students on 26/08/2016 and
27/08/2016 regarding dismantling and assembling of four stroke two wheeler engine,for all the other
department students.
 The Department of Science and Humanities organized several competitions for the students
so as to celebrate the “National Science Day” on 28/02/2017. Mini Project Exhibition,
Rangoli, Face Painting and Quiz with the theme - Science & Technology.

 The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a one day workshop on
11/08/2016, on “Computer and Networking hands-on training” by Mr. Punidhamoorthy of final year
CSE. The students got thorough knowledge of the networking and computer hard ware.
 Workshop was conducted by the students on 26th and 27th of August 2016 regarding dismantling and
assembling of four stroke two wheeler engine for all the other department students.
 G. Deepan Chakravarathy& V. Mohanraj team of second year students got the second prize in
GOKART-Car Modeling.
 D. Nivetha& Mr. Arun team of second year students participated in Engineers Day Celebrations and
designed a copper cooling fan.
Funded Projects
 The Department of Mechanical Engineering received Rs.10000/- TNSCST funds for the
project titled, “Design and construction of vehicle operating on compressed air and solar
panel”, done by Mr.B.Rajadurai and team.
 The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering applied for TNSCST funds for three
projects and received Rs.10000/- funds for the project titled, “Advanced energy meter
integrated with device monitoring.”
 The Final year students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, applied for TNSCST
funds for the project titled, “Weed plant fibres based eco-friendly composites for acoustic
insulation applications” done by Mr.D.Franklin Paul Raj, Mr.V.Tamilselvan and Y.Yagnaraj
under the guidance of Mr.A.Vinod, A.P.
Patents Filed
 A patent was filed for the project titled, “Addition of Solenoid valve operated turbocharger in
two-wheeler to enhance performance”, on 13/02/2017, by the final year students of the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mr.S.Akash, Mr.S.ArulPandi and Mr.P.Karthik
Raja under the guidance of Mr.D.Vijay, A.P.

 A patent was filed for the project titled, “Reduced emission and fuel consumption using
deactivated cylinders in variable displacement engine,” on 25/04/2017, by the final year
students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mr.G.Afsar Hussain, Mr.Sanjay,
Mr.E.Saran Kumar and Mr.E.RanjithKumar,under the guidance of Mr.B.Rajadurai, A.P., and
Mr.B.Kirubakaran, A.P.
Dr.Abdul Kalam Young Achiever Award
 The students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Mr.S.Akash, Mr. Karthick Raja
and Mr.Arul Pandi received the Dr.Abdul Kalam Young Achiever Award from the Youth
Federation for the project, “Addition of Solenoid valve operated turbocharger in two-wheeler
to enhance performance”, at Anna University, Guindy.
 The final year students organized “Free Service Mela” for the public on 17/02/2017for
household appliances like

 In the Campus Interviews for the final year students conducted by the Placement and
Training Cell,this year fifteen industries conducted the campus interview at SLAEC. Our
students attended the “Off-Campus Drives” organized by other institutions also and eight
students got placed through them. Totally 63 students were recruited by these recruiters.
 As a result of the various innovative practices Sri Lakshmi Ammal Engineering College
received the "National Excellence Award as Best Engineering College -South Zone" for the
year 2017 from ASSOCHAM, New Delhi on 23/02/2017.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required
In order to establish the “Do It Yourself” labs, rooms were already available. An amount of around two lakh
rupees was spent to purchase the equipment, tools and household appliances. The only problem was acquiring
the household appliances to be used for the learning process of the principle of working. The appliances such
as refridgerators, washing machines, iron box, mixers, grinders, LED lamps, induction stoves were purchased
second hand as well as the vehicles for the Automobile Labs.
7. Notes

The students have tremendous gains from the “Do It Yourself” labs as they have developed an
innovative spirit. This has made them get the funded projects from TNSCST and apply for patents as well.
Better achievements are expected in future.

APTITUDE TEST TRAINING

2. Goal:

Based on the feed-back of the students, recruiters and the parents, our students were lagging behind
in clearing the Aptitude Test during “Campus Interviews” and “Mock Interviews”. Thus, it was decided to
make arrangement for Aptitude Test Training, so as to make them confident and skilled in attending the
Aptitude Test.

3. The Context

Contemporary students lacked knowledge to attend the Aptitude Test confidently. But, Aptitude Test
is the first round in the “In- Campus or Off-Campus” recruitments conducted by our college or any other
institute.
4. The Practice

 Training on Aptitude & Problem Solving Skill was given as to the First, Second, Third and Final year
students of all the departments, for two hours weekly within the regular college hours.

5. Evidence of Success
 Evident change in the behaviour of the students was observed. Students were much disciplined in the
classroom as well as in the campus in general.
 They showed involvement in their regular classes, laboratory classes, innovative workshops and
projects, presenting seminars, sports and cultural activities.
 The few irregular students also became regular.
 They showed interest in joining the IAS/IPS/IFS and TNPSC coaching classes, which was lacking
before.
 Almost all the students had scored good grades.
 In the Campus Interviews for the final year students conducted by the Placement and Training
Cell, this year fifteen industries conducted the campus interview at SLAEC. Our students

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

 Additional work to staff was assigned in their regular weekly work load. They had to provide apt training
to the students based on the types of aptitude questions asked in various competitive exams as well as
Campus Interviews.
 Feed-back from the industrial resource persons was also followed as guidelines.
 Other observations were part of the routine thus there was no other problem.

7. Notes

As this SLAEC ACADEMY for Competitive Exams was established this year only the
students have been motivated to attend the Competitive exams once they are in their final semester.
Hence, we expect the students to receive the benefits in the forthcoming years.

ANALYSIS OF FEEDBACK FROM THE STAKEHOLDERS

Feed-backs are collected from students, parents, stake holders, industries having interaction with the
institution and the alumni manually on aspects like teaching and learning, research and development
activities, placement training and placement, sports coaching, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

ANALYSIS OF THE FEED-BACK

 It was concluded that all the parents, stake holders, industries having interaction with the institution and
the alumni had one common opinion and demand regarding the past status of the institutions.
 They opined that as many of the students had been from rural areas and also from Tamil medium schools
the students find it very difficult to understand better so as to update themselves in Technical knowledge,
industry oriented skills and communication skills.
 Thus they all had suggested the college to concentrate more on developing the same.

SCHEMES IMPLEMENTED

 Every Saturday is exclusively dedicated for industry oriented Technical Skills Development, in the “Do
It Yourself” lab.
 Several workshops and training sessions are also conducted regularly to provide hands on
training to all the students.
 Each department has established a lab in the name of the Father of that department.

 Workshops conducted by the students for other students has aided in solidifying their knowledge of the
working principles, also in gaining industry oriented technical skills which are necessary in a “Complete
Engineer” as an eligible Engineering Degree holder to get placement or take up Research and
Development in future.
 Also the Multi-media Lab has been successful in providing ample training in communication
skills; that includes Group Discussion, Presentation Skills and Interview Skills, which are
