When we talk about tragedy, the first thing that comes into our minds is that there is an event

that is not unfortunate, unpleasant to happen or that happened. And when we say tragedy it is an event
that cause suffering, pain, injury or extreme accident to people or to a character of a story. But in the
story of “my father’s tragedy” something special happens wherein the true meaning of tragedy suddenly
changes due to its humorous ending.

The story is all about poverty, lack of food supply and addiction of Filipinos in gambling or
cockfighting. Wherein the ironic thing is that even if they can’t eat and their family dies in hunger they
have no intention to work in order to buy some food as long as they have a cock and a spare money to
bet on their chicken.

the characters in the story portrays different characteristics just like the father in the story that
is supposed to be the one who works in their family but instead of working he became a self-oriented
man wherein he based the future of his life and his own family on his fighting cock. the second character
is the mother, the mother in the story is a hardworking mom she is willing to do whatever it takes so
that she can bring home food for them to eat. The children of the family who doesn’t know what is
happening to their surroundings. And other characters like the gamblers, the only thing they know is to
bet in cock fight despite of having lack of food within their family.

The story opened up with a scene that everyone will not expect, a scenario that depicts the
destruction of the source of food cause by insect and fire. The beginning of the story also portrays
scarcity of food based on the situation of the family. The family needs to go house to house for them to
get a meal for them. While the only thing that matter the most to the father in the story is his chicken
even if his family is suffering from hunger. The story of the chicken continues when the father arranged
the match. Days before the match the mother served a chicken dish that all the members of the family
enjoy the hot savory soup. And suddenly the father asked the mother on where that the chicken came
from and the father realize that the chicken was his chicken Burick then the father immediately run to
the street and maybe return all the money that the gamblers bet to his cock.

The thing is that even if we are in the place that the worst thing can happen or we are facing the
worst tragedy in our life we should still work hard in order to get what we want, we shouldn’t rely on
things that we think that can lift us up. We must work on our goals because no one can get to his/her
own goals sitting all day. There is no such thing that come on an instant way.
