3.1 BACKGROUND OF THE RESPONDENT

A questionnaire consists 46 questions which have been divided to 4 sections. Section
1 is about respondent’s informations, section 2 is to identify the symptoms that
students often experience, section 3 is to identify the factors that cause depression and
section 4 is to identify the effect of depression student’s emotion. This questionnaire
were distributed to 63 engineering students which are Mechanical, Chemical, Civil
and Electrical Engineering Faculty and most of the respondents were from
Mechanical Engineering Faculty. Out of 63 respondents, 52.4% were males and
47.6% were females. The respondent’s age is ranged from 18 to 26 years old but most
of the respondents were 22 years old.

3.2 SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

Figure 3.2.1 shows the awareness of sign or symptoms of depression among students.
.

This chart shows that 29 students were answered agree which means they were aware
of the sign of depression that they could experience during their study. Student who
aware they had a sign of depression in early stage could be easy to handle before it get
worst.
Figure 3.2.2 below shows that students who lack of concentration during study. In the
pie chart shows that 57.6% of students were agree that they cannot concentrate when
studying. This finding shows that environment in the class is one of the factor that
students lack of concentration in the class.

Figure 3.2.3 below show that students who do not have good relationship with their
friends. In the chart, 31.8 % of the respondent had answered disagree in this question.
It means that they had a good relationship with their friends. However, some of the
respondents had answered agree which means they had bad relationship with their
friends. Hence, having a good relationship during study can make a student less
depression.
Figure 3.2.4 below shows that students who having a hard time to sleep. In the chart,
it show that 36.4% of the respondent answered agree where they difficult to sleep at
night. Some of the respondent said that they had to finish their assignments which
need to submit before it due time. They also said that there are too many assignments
to submit and also need to study for the exams.

3.3 FACTORS THAT CAUSES DEPRESSION

Figure 3.3.1 shows that student who had a family crisis. In the chart, it shows that
there are similar result on agree and disagree which are 30.3%. Student who are
facing a family crisis tend to depress when studying based on research conducted by
the researcher. Hence, family is important for student because they need family’s
support to enhance their studies and avoid from being depressed and stressed. Family
emotional climate is another contributing factor in child depression. In a study by
Nomura, Wickramaratne, Warner, and Weissman (2002), family relationship
variables of high discord, low cohesion, and high affectionless control were all
important predictors of general child pathology, including depression.
Figure 3.3.2 below shows that student who had a conflict with their lecturers. In the
figure below, it shows that 33.3% respondents had answered disagree which means
they had no problems with their lecturers. However, there is 28.8% respondents who
had a conflict with their lecturers. They stated that they could not cope with the
lecture method in the class. Other than that, students could not understand what
lecturer saying or explaning the topic in the class.

Figure 3.3.3 below shows that students who had trouble managing time. In the chart,
50% of the respondent had trouble managing their time schedule during study.
Previous studies showed an important relationship between time management
disposition, depression, and anxiety tendencies. Specifically, strengthening time
management training will help reduce depression and anxiety levels, Fang HX, Wang
X. (2015).
Figure 3.3.4 below shows that student who had financial problems which causes
depression, anxiety and stress. Based on the chart, 44.3% of the respondent had
financial problem which can causes stress them. Financial problems affects student’s
health in many ways and these health issues can affect their home, study and career
and make it feel impossible ever to turn things around. Financial anxiety and stress
may have severe negative consequences for a student's health, educational outcomes,
along with long-term financial implications (Heckman et al, 2014;Joo et al,
2008;Hogan et al, 2013)
4.2 RECOMMENDATION

Based on the conclusions, it is recommended that :

1) the UiTM should carry out checks on the students who had experiences depression,
anxiety and stress.
2) the UiTM should give counseling session to the students who had depression,
anxiety and stress to encourage them with their studies.
3) the Company can help the students by giving scholarship to students and help
student’s financial during study.
