WELCOME
BACK TO
SCHOOL!
Hello parents/guardians! My name
is Danielle Tarchara and I am your
student’s sixth grade mathematics
teacher this school year. I am so
excited to welcome your students
and all of you into my classroom
this year.
In the first edition of our class
newsletter, I wanted to highlight
two online mathematical programs
that we will be using this year.
Technology has become a valuable
tool throughout the school building,
and this is especially true in our
mathematics classroom. The two
most popular programs that we will
be utilizing in and outside of the
classroom this year are IXL and
GeoGebra.
IXL: At a Glance
IXL is a learning website that allows
students to practice skills in
Mathematics, ELA, Science, and
Social Studies across grades Pre-K
through 12. Through their school
Google account, students have
access to IXL and all of its resources.
IXL is a great personalized learning
tool that helps students practice and
build their confidence in the
mathematics that we will be learning
about this school year. Starting next
week, I will be assigning students
skills that will coincide with what we
are learning in class. These skills will
be presented to students as either
multiple choice, fill in the

an answer. However, if students
go to complete a skill that they
do not feel comfortable with yet,
there is a section with
recommended skills to complete
that will help build the
background knowledge that
students could use to complete
the assigned skill. As your
student’s teacher, I can see what
skills students are working on or
have completed, how long it is
taking students to complete each
skill, and how many questions it
took for students to complete
each skill. IXL will be used to not
only help students practice the
skills we are learning, but to help
guide my teaching instruction.

Students will be assigned one
to three skills per week that will
either be completed in school or
at home.
Possible topics include:
- Adding or subtracting
decimals
- Multiplying fractions
- Interpreting line plots
- Solving multi-step word
problems

GeoGebra: What
is it?
Why Use GeoGebra?
GeoGebra is a new tool that we will be
introducing to students this school year.
This interactive program allows students
to visually see, manipulate, and gain a
greater understanding of the
mathematics that we will be learning
about. GeoGebra also provides students
practice navigating through a computer
program; building their skillset in
navigate through technology. This
practice will benefit students not only in
this classroom, but will give them the

GeoGebra?
GeoGebra is a computer program
that students will be using to learn
more about geometry and algebra.
This computer program is
downloaded on each student’s
Chromebook and on school
computers as well. A few
examples of topics we will be
using GeoGebra for are to help us
draw 2-Dimensional and 3-
Dimensional shapes like squares,
rectangles, triangles. We will also
be practicing our problem solving
skills solving mathematical
problems that involve area,
perimeter, volume, and surface
area. In algebra, a few examples
tools that can be applied in future
classes or their future careers.
GeoGebra will allow students to
become more creative in the
mathematics classroom. By using
the GeoGebra computer program
this school year, students will gain
a new insight to seeing and
understanding mathematics.

- Find area and perimeter
- Find measurements of angles
- Graph points and/or lines
- Interpret graphs
- Create number lines
- And much more!

GeoGebra for are to help us draw
number lines, interpret rational
numbers on these number lines,
and practicing graphing points on
a coordinate plane. Starting in two
weeks, I am going to begin to
teach mini lessons and provide
activities for students to begin
learning about GeoGebra.
Students will be placed into pairs
to start experimenting with
GeoGebra and when they are
comfortable they will be
individually completing activities
and assignments throughout the
school year.
