MODULE 5: DISCUSSION

PROBLEM:

One hundred individuals, aged 20-58, were given a test of psychomotor skill. Both age
and score were classified as shown in the table: Set alpha at the 10% level

SCORE
AGE HIGH AVERAGE LOW
40-59 23 20 17
20-39 18 12 10

SOLUTION:

1. Set the null and alternative hypothesis

 H0 = the scores obtained in psychomotor test does not depend on the

individual’s age.
 Ha = the scores obtained in psychomotor test depend on the individual’s age.

2. Set your degree of freedom

 Since the given data is a two-way classification, the degree of freedom is

computed as:

DF = (k – 1) (r – 1)

DF = (2 – 1) (3 – 1)

DF = 2
3. Set your tabular value

 The tabular value at 2 DF and 10% significance level is 4.61.

4. Set your computed value of chi-square

 For two-way classification, get the expected frequencies using the

following formula:

E = (row total) (column total)

Grand total

E11 = (41) (60) / 100 = 24.6

E12 = (32) (60) / 100 = 19.2

E13 = (27) (60) / 100 = 16.2

E21 = (41) (40) / 100 = 16.4

E22 = (32) (40) / 100 = 12.8

E23 = (27) (40) / 100 = 10.8

Then we substitute the values into the formula:

𝑋 2 = ∑ (𝑂 – 𝐸)2 / 𝐸

= [(23 – 24.6)2 / 24.6] + [(20 – 19.2)2 / 19.2] + [(17 – 16.2)2 / 16.2] + [(18
– 16.4)2 / 16.4] + [(12 – 12.8)2 / 12.8] + [10 – 10.8)2 / 10.8]

= 0.44

5. Set your conclusion

 Since 4.61 (tabular value) > 0.44 (computed value), we accept the null
hypothesis. The scores obtained in psychomotor test do not depend on the
individual’s age.
