MODULE 4: DISCUSSION

Instruction:
On the given problem:

1. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis

2. Establish the critical region
3. Compute the value of statistical test
4. Decide whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis
5. Draw a conclusion

Case # 1
The treasurer of a certain university claims that the mean monthly salary of their college
professors is P21, 750 with a standard deviation of P6, 000. A researcher takes a random
sample of 75 college professors were found to have a mean salary of P19, 375. Do the 75
college professors have lower salaries than the rest? Test the claim at αα = .05 level of
significance

1. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis

𝐻𝑜 : The mean monthly salary of the College professors is 21,750 (µ = 21,750)
𝐻𝑎 : The mean monthly salary of the College professors is lower is less than 21,750
(µ < 21,750)

2. Establish the critical region

𝛼 = 0.05 which is equivalent to +1.645

3. Compute the value of statistical test

x̅− µ 𝟏𝟗,𝟑𝟕𝟓−𝟐𝟏,𝟕𝟓𝟎
𝒁= 𝝈 = 𝟔,𝟎𝟎𝟎 = −𝟑. 𝟒𝟐𝟖𝟎 𝒐𝒓 − 𝟑. 𝟒𝟑
√𝒏 √𝟕𝟓

4. Decide whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis

The value of z which is equal to -3.43 ( -3.43 = 0.0003) lies under the rejection region,
therefore reject the null hypothesis.
5. Draw a conclusion

(0.0003 < 0.05)

The equivalent of z which is 0.0003 is less than the significance level of 0.05,
therefore reject the null hypothesis. The 75 professors have lower salaries than the
other, thus, there is a significant difference between the salaries of college professors.

Case # 2
The mean we eight of the baggage carried into an airplane by individual passengers to Batanes
Airport is 19.8 kilogram. A statistician takes a random sample of 110 passengers and obtain a
sample mean weight of 18.5 kilograms with standard deviation of 8.5 kilograms. Test the claim
at αα = .01 level of significance

1. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis

𝐻𝑜 : µ = 19.8 kg
𝐻𝑎 : µ < 19.8 kg

2. Establish the critical region

𝛼 = 0.01 which is equivalent to -2.33

3. Compute the value of statistical test

x = 18.5 kg
µ = 19.8 kg
𝜎 = 8.5 kg
n = 110

x̅ − µ 𝟏𝟖. 𝟓 − 𝟏𝟗. 𝟖
𝒁= 𝝈 = = −𝟏. 𝟔𝟎
𝟖. 𝟓
√𝒏 √𝟏𝟏𝟎

4. Decide whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis

The computed value of z = -1.60 which lies under the non-rejection region.
Therefore, accept the null hypothesis (Ho).

5. Draw a conclusion
(0.0548 > 0.01)
0.0548 is greater than the significance level of 0.01, therefore we fail to reject the
null hypothesis. There is no significant difference between the weights of the passengers’
baggage.
