PRESENT CONTINUOUS (SUB.

+ AM/IS/ARE + V –ING)

1) Actions happening at the moment of speaking.

We’re learning to use this app at the moment.

They aren’t watching movies now because they’re taking online classes now.

Are you all paying attention to our class? Yes, we are. / No, we aren’t.

*Sometimes, the Present Continuous can also be used to describe pictures:

There are two people in this picture and they are drinking water. They’re sitting on
the grass and they’re both smiling. I’m sure they’re having a really good time.

2) Actions happening only for a short period of time – temporary situations.

We’re taking online classes these days because we aren’t allowed to go to school.

What are you doing this time now that you have to stay at home?

Our teacher is teaching online these months so she’s trying to learn more each day.

3) Arrangements. (future)

We’re doing the first exam in a couple of weeks.

When are you both getting married?

Are you attending the conference next week?

In the three cases, the form is exactly the same. The different thing is the context
as well as the time expressions.

*Another way to use the Present Continuous is when we mention something that
happens repeatedly and in some cases it’s something we find annoying.

She’s always pretending to be the best student in the class.
