READING WEEK 5
Read the following text and answer the questions below.
Thomas Alva Edison is probably the greatest inventor although he isn’t a good student when he is
young. At the age of 12, he leaves school and never goes back! The first job he has is selling
newspapers on trains, and later, at the age of 16, he gets a job working in a telegraph office. Not
all Edison’s inventions are successful at the beginning, in fact, the first one is a failure. Many of his
later inventions, however, are a success and Edison becomes famous. Most people believe he is a
genius.

Edison works hard all his life, often working all night in his laboratory, and does not come home
for days at a time. During an interview, reporters ask him “What makes a genius?” and he
responds, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration." Edison marries his first wife, Mary
Stilwell, when he is 24. She is only 16 at the time. The story is that he taps out his proposal to her
in Morse code on a gas-pipe: "Will you marry me?" and Mary answers “I will", also in Morse code.

Mary dies when Edison is 37 years old and two years later he marries his second wife, Mina
Miller. Although most of the inventions which make Edison famous are made in the first half of his
life, Edison continues working and inventing until he is over 70, often working 16 hours a
day! During his long and productive life Edison makes 1,300 inventions. Edison dies on October
18, 1931, at the age of 84. America and the world mourn his death.

Skimming should help you to:

•read more quickly

•decide whether you want/need to read something in more detail

•think about your reading and ask questionsSkimming means reading something very
quickly just to get an idea of what it is about.Just skim over the surfaceof it to find the main
point and don’t read every detail.

1Start with a short piece e.g. a short text task. As usual, get as much information as you
canbefore you begin.

•What sort of text is it?

•What is the title?

•Is there apicture or diagram to help?

2Let your eyes move over it quicklylooking out for important words

. Don’t bother with little words like ‘the’, ‘to’ and ‘are’ or the descriptive words like ‘very’.

3Find out as much as you can as quickly as you can.

Tips

•Don’t read every word.

•Don’t read every sentence.

•Let your eyes move quickly.

•Keep thinking about the meaning.

4Now try skimming the following text. Concentrate on:

•the title

•any diagram/pictures

•the first line of each paragraphSkimming

SKIMMING EXERCISE
Instructions: Skim through the following text:

Lava Lamp

Materials:

•A clean plastic bottle, try to use one with smooth sides

•Water

•Vegetable oil (or you can use Mineral or Baby Oil)

•Fizzing tablets (such Alka Seltzer)

•Food colouring

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.Fill the bottle up about 1/4th (1 quarter) with water.

2.Pour the vegetable oil in the bottle until is almost full. You may want to use a measuring
cup with a spout or a funnel. You may have to wait a couple of minutes for the oil and
water to separate.

3.Add a few drops of your favorite food coloring. Watch as the color sinks through the oil.
Did your drops of color mix with the water immediately or float in between for a few
minutes?

4.Break your fizzy tablet in half and drop part of it into the bottle. Get ready … here come
the bubbly blobs!

5.You can even get a flashlight, turn off the lights and drop in another half tablet. This time
shine the flashlight through the lava lamp while the blobs are bubbling!

HOW IT WORKS:

The oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense or lighter than water. The food
coloring has the same density as the water so it sink through the oil and mixes with the
water. When you add the tablet it sinks to the bottom then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves
it makes gas, carbon dioxide. Gas or air, is lighter than water so it floats to the top. The air
bubbles bring some colored water with them to the top. When the air comes out of the
colored water blob, the water gets heavy again and sinks. It does this over and over again
until the tablet is completely dissolved.

Questions:
1 Put into your own words what you think this is about before reading the whole text.

Talk about how to make a lava lamp, the steps and materials and how it is supposed to
work.

2 Read the whole text.

3 What specific information does the text give you?

All the materials and step by step how to make the lamp.

4 Did you already know about how this experiment is made?

No, I didn't know.

5 Find at least 5 new words you found in the text with their meaning in Spanish.

1 fizzy – gaseosa.

2 Fizzing – burbujeante.

3 funnel – embudo.

4 blobs - manchas

5 bubbling - burbujeante

6 Why do you consider it is important to use skimming when reading?

To have a quick reading comprehension on any subject.

/e/.
