LESSON OBSERVATION FORM

The purpose of the classroom observations is to note methods and procedures utilized to achieve
learning outcomes.

Name of Class: Reading Class Grade Level: 2 Time: 9:30am

Describe the purpose of the lesson: The purpose of this lesson was for students to work on their
reading and comprehension skills.

What happened before the start of the lesson (how did students enter the room, what did they/the
teacher do prior to beginning the lesson proper, if anything)?
Students were already in the room as this is their main room for the day. We unfortunately
missed the introduction or transition from something else into this lesson. Students were already
working when we entered the room.

Describe the start of the lesson proper – how did the teacher frame and begin the lesson?
We missed the introduction. However, Mr Gabler made sure to remind the students of what they
were responsible for and circulated the room to help any students that needed help.

Describe the main lesson focus and culminating activities. Were these effective in engaging the
students in the content and helping them learn it? Why/why not?
The main lesson consisted of students working with partners to complete a chapter and the
review questions associated with the chapter. The students were working with google classroom
so they could enter their answers to the review questions right on the computer for Mr. Gabler to
see and grade later. The students did seem engaged and working very well with their partners. I
don’t know that using the computer helped keep them engaged but I do not think it took away
from their engagement. I do believe this makes it easier for the teacher to be able to log in and
view their work rather than shuffling papers. The close of the lesson consisted of a live quiz
which was very cool. Students were separated into random groups and answered questions on
their computer. The results were combined with their group and a score was on the smart board
so there was a level of competition.

What instructional strategies did the teacher use in order to maximize student outcomes?
There was not a lot of instruction during this lesson, except to reiterate directions and
expectations of submitted work.
Marzano 1-4 scale. 1-help…4-I’m an expert

How did the teacher bring closure to the lesson?

Kyle Meier 4/4/2020

The live quiz was a closing activity but then Mr. Gabler reviewed what the kids would be
working on next and gave them a little time to transition to the next lesson.

Describe any elements of the lesson that you felt were particularly effective overall:
The live quiz was a very cool thing for me to see and seemed to really get the students motivated
to do well. I can see this being used to enhance learning in many ways.

Describe what, if anything, you might have done differently in this lesson:
I think the only thing I MIGHT do differently depending on the students is to read some of the
chapter as a class and go over some vocab or content that I think they may struggle with or that
they will see later and I want to make it stand out to them.
