INDUCED DRAFT FAN

INTRODUCTION
Radial Fans manufactured are single stage, double suction, simply Supported/overhung
Centrifugal machines, which can be used to handle hot gases. In this type of fans, the medium
handled enters the impeller axially and after passing through the impeller leaves radially. A large
part of the energy transferred to the medium is converted in to kinetic energy as the medium
passes through the impeller. The spiral casing converts part of the kinetic energy in the medium
to pressure energy. The output of the fan is usually controlled by varying the speed of the fan by
suitable speed control device and also by inlet dampers.

PRE-COMMISSIONING CHECK LIST


ENSURE THE FOLLOWNG
 The bases of fan parts are tightened without strain.
 The direction of rotation of impeller with respect to casing
 Tightness of all foundation bolts of fan/motor.
 Tightness of connecting bolts of bearing housing.
 Horizontality of the shaft within 0.04 mm/m
 Squareness (face out) and the tightness of the thrust collar
 Bearing clearances (Oil clearance, side clearance and axial gap)
 Condition of the liner babbitting
 Oil level and recommended grade of oil for fan bearing
 Free rotation of oil rings.
 Cooling water flow to the bearings liners
 No water leakages inside the bearing housing through liners.
 Impeller clearances with respect to stator parts
 Direction of operation of inlet dampers/inlet guide flaps with respect to the direction of
rotation of impeller.
 Inlet Guide Vane assembly The Direction of Opening of Inlet Guide Vanes shall be in the
Opposite direction of rotation of impeller viewing from suction side.
 Damper Flaps Control assembly: The Direction of Opening of inlet damper flaps shall be
in the same direction of rotation of impeller viewing form suction end.
 Power cylinder / actuator for proper actuation of suction damper / inlet guide vane (full
open to full close).
 Linearity of the damper / inlet guide flaps position in control room with respect to local
indication.
Double Suction NDZV) with Sleeve Bearing
 Proper operation of inlet damper / inlet guide vane and outlet gate/damper.
 Tightness of coupling bolts.
 Correct setting of coupling gap.
 Alignment of couplings as per the FQA log sheets
 Rotate rotor by hand and ensure rotation without any mechanical rubbing.
 Condition of balancing weight in impeller and shaft
 Removal all transport stiffeners (Yellow painted).
 Calibration of all instruments for Fan / Motor
 Proper functioning of interlocks / protections
 Proper assembly of all expansion joints
 No foreign matter is left inside fan casing.
 No loose pieces are found in the suction side ducting of the fan.
 Proper earthing of motor body and all statutory conditions stipulated by motor
manufacturer are complied with. Proper functioning of "Emergency Off switch”.
 Proper direction of rotation of motor.
 Never run the Fan / Motor without protections / interlocks.

STARTUP AND OPERATION
Here the switching sequence for the fan is described as individual equipment.
START PERMISSIVE
The inlet damper / inlet guide vane / radial vane control and discharge gate / damper of the fan
should be in closed position (if provided). Open discharge damper/ gate simultaneously after
starting the motor. Lubrication oil level in the bearing should be ensured. Cooling water flow to
the bearings
AIARM & TRIP VALUES
Description Alarm
1. Fan Bearing Temperature >77 °C
2. Fan Bearing Vibration {Vel -rms}
For Fans erected on Solid Concrete foundation > 4.5 mm/s
3. Fan Bearing Vibration (Vel - rms) For Fans
erected on Spring isolator > 7.0 mm/S

STARTUP AND TEST RUNNING


 Ensure that all protections and interlock are functioning properly.
 Start the motor, Check for correct direction of rotation of motor.
 Test runs the motor for one hour.
 If found satisfactory couple fan with motor.
 Keep the delivery damper in full close position.
 Start the fan and note starting time.
 Ensure that the discharge damper opens full after the fan has accelerated to full speed.
 Operation of the fan with discharge damper fully closed is not permissible.
 Check for the rotation of the oil rings and ensure that the oil is carried.
 Measure the vibrations and temperature of the bearings. Record the vibrations and bearing
temperatures every 15 minutes for first half an hour of run and every 30 minutes for the
subsequent 2 hours of run and every hour till trial run completion.
 Check for any abnormal noise and oil leakage in the fan.
 Check and record the motor current, voltage and fan load.
 Test run for 8 hours.
In case, the bearing temperature is high and vibration and noise is excessive, the fan should be
diagnosed and rectified.

CHECKS DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF THE FAN


During continuous operation of the fan the data should be logged as per the format: "Operational
parameter". Apart from the data logged in the format the following additional information is to
be logged at fixed convenient intervals.
 Vibration level
 Oil level in the bearings
 Leakage in lub oil

If the fan trips on “bearing temperature high” protection, it is mandatory that


the bearings are to be thoroughly inspected before restarting the fan.

SHUTDOWN OF FAN
 Gradually decrease the load of the fan to minimum.
 Stop the fan. (Follow the switching off sequence)
 Close the discharge dampers.
 Note the deceleration time of the fan.

Vibration Characteristics
Vibration in the simplest form may be considered as the motion of a part of a machine back and
forth from its position of rest end can be expressed as a simple harmonic motion.
Displacement
Total distance of movement of part is peak to peak displacement or Double Amplitude in micron.
Velocity
The speed at which the part is vibrating in mm/sec
Frequency
The number of cycles of this movement for a given period of time is the frequency.
