TUTORIAL 5

Using SKELETAL STRUCTURE, answer the following questions. Give an IUPAC

NOMENCLATURE for each of the structures you drew in i., ii., iii., and iv.

i. Derive ONE (1) FUNCTIONAL GROUP ISOMER of pentanal. The parent

chain must remain its 5-carbon chain length.

ii. Derive ONE (1) POSITIONAL ISOMER from the structure you determined in
i. The parent chain must remain its 5-carbon chain length.

iii. Derive ONE (1) CHAIN ISOMER from the structure you determined in i.

iv. Derive CIS/TRANS ISOMERS of pent-2-enal.

v. Draw the molecules of 2,3,4-trihydroxybutanal using Fisher Projection. Indicate

the chiral carbon with an asterisk symbol (*). Draw the ENANTIOMER and
DIASTREOMER of this molecules.
