Math Activity Plan

Theme: Plants

Sub.theme: Plants around Me

Name of Activity: Foods from plants

Date: November, 2020

Age: 4-5 year olds                

Special Needs: N/A

Duration: 30 minutes

Previous Knowledge: Children are familiar with learning concepts related to plants. They can

perform simple Math operations such as counting, sorting and sequencing.

Learning Outcomes:  Wellness, Intellectual Empowerment, Effective Communication,

Aesthetic Expression

Objectives: Children will be given the opportunity to:

Knowledge:

· Identify and name at least 3 plants found at home that gives food

    Describe their favourite food to eat from plants

Skill:
·  Develop fine motor skills using a variety of media for self-expression

Demonstrate the ability to express ideas through numbers

Attitude:

Demonstrate a willingness to participate in activities

Disposition:

Children will develop curiosity, concentration, ability to problem-solve and creativity

Materials:  flannel board, thongs, tray, fruit and vegetable leaves, paper plates, scissors, paint,

white construction paper, variety of cut out fruits and vegetables,glue, petals, plant worksheet

Differentiated Strategies: grouping, sharing

Procedure:

Introduction: Children will be encouraged to participate in singing the plant song. “Food from

Plants” to the tune Farmer in the Dell, as the teacher adds picture on the flannel board.

Development:

Step 1: Children will be encouraged to take turns listening to each other as they attempt to

identify and name at least three plants found at home that produce food.

Step 2: Allow two children to say what their favourite food from plants is. Children can opt to

use pictures from interactive chart to further assist with their explanation.
Step 3: Work materials will be sorted into three groups labeled A,B & C. Children will take

turns selecting their activity of choice. They will then submit a short video showing the process

and completion of their activity. 

Group A: (Collage) Children will cut and paste pictures from magazines onto a

template/printout of one food type to create a collage.

Group B: (Leaf Painting) Children will sort fruit and vegetable

leaves using a thong. They will apply paint (their preferred colour)

and create a design of their own by applying the painted leaves on

white cardstock paper.

Group C: (Number fruit/vegetable garden) Children will create a fruit or

vegetable garden on a paper plate by placing the right number of fruits or

vegetables to match the number on their plate.

Step 4 Closure: After children have completed their group activities,

teacher will engage children in singing the introductory song once more. Children will briefly

share with the class what they enjoyed most about the activities and where possible share any

new information they might have gathered about foods from plants.

 Assessment: Each child will be sent a worksheet where they will count the

number of fruits and draw a line to match it to the correct number. 

Follow up Activities: Children will watch the following videos to further

develop an appreciation for plants that produce foods.
